I had similar problem with my 2004 freelander1, the cop gave me a chase because of black smoke from exhaust like hell. Went to a garage he didn't open the engine lid just plugged in the diagnostic tool and said it is the turbo charger combustion problem paid £20 for the test. See as he was fully booked I went to another garage he insisted he also use the test gear and found the same fault in combustion but can't pinpoint the part or area and gave an appointment to come back. He suggested go on the motorway and accelerate the smoke should clear up tried that too. That night I came back to landyzone website checked black smoke threads and someone said it's the hose. Opened the bonnet lid straight away and saw a large black patch inside bonnet over a bent hose with a 1" visible crack. Job was easy replacing the part. Worth opening the engine lid before plugging the computer anyway times were changed we trust diagnostic tools first before the naked eye.
There are definitely times when each will be best.

I could tell you exactly what the issue is (boost pipe split), based on the computer fault description.

Reading further down, I was right. ;)

Morning Guys,

Old Thread but wanted to say thanks awayway… Friday coming back from work, low power black smoke….. worried I nursed it back home, quick google and straight to this thread and the intercooler pipe had popped off….

What a fantastic forum and people constantly helping others….

Happy Monday everyone ❤️

That feeling driving it home in clouds of smoke! Thinking the worst has happened.
Glad it got fixed.

But like I said this is a fantastic forum with really helpful people….

However it's great if you have some twerp in a convertible tailgating and the black smoke suddenly stops them. Happened when my turbo hose went 😈
