Hello Out There

I have seen other threads on this but here is my experience with no solution yet. Took my 02 Td4 infor a 72K service (local recommended garage, not the dealer for the first time) . Came out and found that when doing about 70/80mph I would loose power and was able to push the accelerator to the floor and nothing would happen and slowly loose speed. Got LR Assistance out as I thought a turbo hose had gone, this was not the case. Took to the LR Dealers, they replaced air flow sensor, might have made a slight differance although fault still occurred, checked other hose before exhaust valve ,thought it had a small hole, replaced, no change, inspected other hoses and do not think they are collapsing, replaced exhaust valve, no change, replaced a fuel senor thing on the front of the engine, no change and now waiting to go back for a thorough going over. I avoid motorways now and seems to drive sort of alright at 30 to 40mph although I feel fuel consumption is up and there is definetly I feel more exhaust being produced but not black smoke. Any ideas welcomed.

I have had exactly the same problem. L/R dealership tried everything and eventually suggested I get rid! I've managed to find a ex L/R technician who is now s/e and he is looking at the problem for me next week. He muttered a few words about fuel pumps (apparently Freelanders have lots of these:) :) ) and they can go wrong causing lack of fuel when you need it most. If he gets to the root of the problem I'll gladly share the info. Hope to update you soon. Looking forward to sorting out mine!

Thanks for that. I did have a fuel pump replaced a couple of months ago when it started having difficulties starting. We shall see although looking on bulletin boards this is not an uncommon problem. Keep you informed when I get some news next week.

I've got the same problem ,as posted earlier, all started with holes in my intercooler hoses. Anyway I've taken mine to a specialist who has discounted the air sensor, hasn't decided what it is yet ,but he did mention that the turbo has variable pitch blades! can you believe that! anyway he says he's heard that these can go wrong, I'm taking the car in next week, so who knows:confused:

Thanks for that, I will be very interesting on your diagnosis and whether it worked. I got a courtesy car today, another Td4 and it drove like a dream, much better than my sick one. I do wonder if things have gradually been tailing off for a while. Let you know how I get on.

Hi Folks
Well, my technician guy has looked at it and even he is flumoxed by the loss of power issue. He has also tried just about everything. He's said he's going to seek more advice from his technician pals and come back to me this week. I'll keep you posted.

The latest from the dealer is that it might be the "waste gate actuator" as the valve appears to be jammed shut. On another similar model they can push it open with their fingers but on mine it is solid. If so it will be a new turbo. I am still waiting for their final verdict and the cost. Apparently they cannot repair the fault on the turbo, you need a new unit. I am a novice on all this, any experts out there. My concern is that by going to another garage, replacing/reconditioning the turbo and the fault still persists I am left with having paid for a new turbo and still the old problem. Bought a couple of lottery tickets for tonight, hope I win the jackpot!! How much to fit a new turbo anyone?? Thanks for looking.

Hello Everyone,

Got my Freelander back today and touch wood it seems fine. I was told the problem was the variable vane adjustor on the turbo was not working properly and so needed a new turbo,. The place I took it to (Not a dealer) showed me the old turbo and said the control rod was not moving far enough and was almost seized. He felt it was more probably more an internal vane problem rather than actuator. There was a bit of oil in the old turbo which he felt was through the system and whilst the exhaust was still a bit smokey, this was old oil that should clear up. I took it out on the motorway tonight and it flew along with no loss of power and I think when I got back much less smoky. I hope this is it all solved. The amazing thing the cost of a new turbo and fitted was half the price of the dealer. Hope I got my terminology right, not quite an expert yet!!!

that sounds great- got my problem fixed yesterday similar problem, the actuator valve itself was buggered
really good company in redditch called MJA landrover

hi i am having the same problem with my 52 freelander it has been diagnosed as a faulty secondary fuel pump which is situated up in the rear wheelarch apparently there is two fuel pumps one inside the fuel tank which is to draw fuel up out of the tank and the secondary one is to feed the engine , the estimate to replace the secondary fuel pump is around £359 but i have been lucky as it failed 4 days before my warranty ran out , so i am now waiting for the dealer to get back to me for the replacement , this is what i have been told after my TD4 had been conected to the diagnostic machine at my local landrover dealer , i will let you know if it cures our problem .

i am now reading you have had your problem solved i hope my problem will go as smooth

Hi

I thought it was just mine but can see its more common than that !

Had my 2002 TD4 6 months and must say very pleased with it until a couple of weeks ago when it lost power at around 70 mph in top gear on the motorway, especially when you hit a hill it can drop down to 50 mph.

The funny thing is when you experience the loss on power at 70 you can pull off the motorway and it will accelerate though the gears like a sports car, it only seems to lose power at speeds and if it continues off the motorway if you stop the engine for a couple of Min's then restart its perfect until you hit speeds of 70 + mph or occasionally you only have to slow down and it will regain its power again. I took it into a 4X4 specialist last week they said it was the air flow meter and changed it for £225 but same problem, they thought it was a faulty unit so changed it again today for free but problem still exists.

Any suggestions as the 4X4 garage is talking to L/R but have no idea as yet.

My advice is that if you have really good power on short accelerations and then the boost suddenly dies at about 3500-3750 rpm on sustained revs it will almost certainly be the turbo, apparently there is some kind of variable variable pitched blade systrm which uses the same part as the EGR valve controller onb a TD5

Hello Everyone

Some very helpful person told me that he has fitted several new but it turns out faulty turbos. I have had a new turbo fitted, went fine but the fault has now retuyrned etc etc. They put a new MAF sensor in but the fault still existed. Car back in garage, very nice and friendly and I will speak to them tomorrow. Keep you posted!!!

THe Saga Continues....

Apparently everything around the turbo such as actuators etc has been replaced. The garage have spoken to a help desk and they reckon it might be a 2002 engine management software issue. The car is going in next week for diagnostics/ reprogramming etc etc so we will see how this goes. Keep you informed. Very helpful garage and nice to do businesss with.

I have same problem with my 2002 TD4 ES. I have done approx 80,000 miles. Other than a minor problem (radio/cd control switch on steering wheel fell off first time it was touched) mine has run sweetly until last Thursday.

Took it to Landrover dealer in Perth yesterday as pre-arranged. They say they can't road test above 70 mph!!! (They also told me this when I phoned to book car in).

How will they ever diagnose the problem???

Iv'e told them what the problem is.

They are the experts (well they charge obscene hourly rates as if they were) so how they fix it is their problem.

The "technician" phoned me later. Couldn't find a problem he says. Well he wouldn't do if he didn't go faster than 70 mph. What are these poeople on!!!

He said they found that an air inlet hose had split, did I want it replaced?
Are these people real!!! If somethings broke you fix it don't you???

Having collected the car, I was driving down the M90 so put my fooft to the floor to find that the car ....

was still the same ie power drops off at 80 mph.

There is a steep hill between Bridge of Earn and Glenfarg. My Freelander took it at 80 mph.. down to 75mph .. down to 70 mph ... down to 65 mph ... down to 60 mph. I didn't have to change down though.

In a car with this problem I don't have much confidence in overtaking other vehicles.

Hello Everyone and BABell especially,

BABell, I know exactly how you feel,I could have screamed at times dealing with our "Main Dealer" here.

However we have found an independant LR specialists who whilst not solving the problem yet have been helpful, positive and want to find a solution for us at half the price.

I think the difference is a main dealer wants you to buy a car from them and thats it, an independant wants to help you and keep your business.

Keep you posted how my reprogramming goes next week.

Gave up on Somerset 4X4 as they wouldn't return my calls and hadn't any idea where to go next, they said drop it off and they will keep it until sorted, but no courtesy car and when asked how long they wanted it he said how long is a piece of string !!!
Phoned Taunton L/R Monday and was booked in on Wednesday, they sounded confident so took it down for 10am, by 3pm had a phone call to say it was sorted.
They found the Turbo was over boosting which was caused be the vacuum pipe and a sticking valve to be the cause, they fitted the part (£40+vat) and tested it as OK, he did say it was all pointing to the MAF & air flow meter but as the A.F.M had been changed they went deeper they also noticed the engine was noisy when accelerating this again was down to the turbo over boosting.
All in it cost me £175 including the 15% discount they gave me as a premier customer (not sure why but 15% is 15% !) but I couldn't care less as I drove home on the motorway and it drove just like new, I was even confident enough to put my foot down and overtake in the outside lane.
I would recommend anyone to Taunton L/R the service was excellent and they restored my faith in garages, they dropped me into town whilst they repaired it and a free taxi ride back to collect it, well worth the money.

Hope this helps someone with the same problem as I USED to have.

Hi
I had a problem like this with my Freelander loss of power. I had a new airflow meter fitted.Which restored power abit. But when I change my diesel fuel filter I noticed a great improvement!. The diesel fuel filters only cost a few quid, and don't take more than a few mins to fit. There is a hand pump on the in-line side on the fuel line. Just squeeze it a few times to prime the new filter and away you go. it worked for me.
Regards
chris

Ive not read every post in this thread from start to finish BUT.

I have had quite a few freelanders in latley with very simlar problems, wont rev past 4000rpm / lack of power etc etc

Belive it or not every one was down to the fuel filter on the inner wing.
( That most garages carnt be botherd to change because they are a pain to do )

The fuel filters had calapsed inside causing a lack of fuel to the injector rail.

Ps pugging the freelanders in to my diagnostic tools before the filter change, DID tell me that it was fuel pressure problem BUT it was NOT any of the pumps.

Hope this info may help others
