Both front CV's.
Engine mounting
Both ball joint's
Brake disks
No power after 3000rpm (still!!!)
HDC, TC and ABS light's burning
Brake cylinder seals
Poor ventilation

Hi Chris

The HDC TC and ABS lights burning is caused by the failure of the 15amp fuse in that circuit. Usually caused by faulty trailer light wiring. A very common problem and not the fault of the Freelander

Yes, the cap on the newer style bottle is a different size...

Ok had it back to the garage....they tell me it pressure tests ok and they can't find the leak.

They reckon it may be a crack somewhere.....offered to get me re con engine...I am ****ed off and seriously considering steel seal......

TeeDee - a 2001 car.

So the faults you refer to in the last year are on a 9 year old car ....

I have just bought a 2006 5 dr HSE TD4 Auto, so I am hoping for the best (have a warranty with Warranty Direct). Its very nice so far.
But we have just replaced a 53 Volvo V40 which had £1000 spent on it at last service. Going back a bit further we had to replace both front springs - cracked right through.

Old cars cost money.

Bought myself an '06 TD4 HSE in March and other than fitting the EGR Bypass, I've only had the bonnet up to check oil (which hasn't needed topping up) and to refill washer bottle!!!

After having a week I did a round trip to Chamonix with no problems (before fitting EGR bypass).

I've had no problems my Freelander at all - although my front tyres are wearing a bit on the inside (tracking!!).

I guess you get problems with all makes and models, just that you can get some really bad ones. I seem to be lucky (touch wood) so far.

My mate has got a 3yr old BMW 1 series and she's had nothing but problems with - failed it's first MOT on emissions!!!!

TD4 cankshaft broke on no1 b/e journal fillet.Engine still runs fine and all bearings could be re used Only covered 136,000kms.Wot the hell!!

So many crankshaft failures because of oil pump failures and new pumps not available. Are these foreign owners taking revenge ? 98,99 and 2000 models with no more than 180,000kms.

First real fault with my L series came about today - Fuel cut off valve is failing causing lack of power and rough idle.

Bought my 98 S Freelander 3dr 1.8 2 months ago, no major problems, good history with it, got to top up coolant frequently (will try the correct bleeding procedure) but is silky smooth for a rover 1.8 and at the moment is more reliable than my Disco 300tdi (sat outside with fuek system fault), a VERY under-rated car, I get quite annoyed at the diff lock snobs who call them 'Gaylanders' etc a good solid corrosion free go just about anywhere motor! 3 cheers for Freelanders!

Replaced coolant reservoir as the cap had failed, and the tank was old. New one shows the coolant as red/pink. Oldun showed it as orange. And still does now it's been removed.

Topped up the PAS as it's always been on the min mark, but doesn't leak. Snapped the cap clips inside on that so that'll need replacing now.

Tailgate still ok. Took it apart and there was a connector loose. This stopped it from opening.

Only issues (thus far):
  • Both front doors fail to unlock on remote/key use
  • Heater Matrix leaking

No doubt more to come sooner or later...:D

Fuel pump, windscreen wiper motor and starter motor. All replaced but not at the same time. Took two years to accumulate those problems.

The bracket that holds the remote fob battery came away from the pcb. Soldered it back ok. Thats this weeks fix sorted.

Has anybody had one that hasnt suffered from the more major faults such as hgf and vcu? Im looking to replace a disco that has died of old age. Problem is replacement it needs to be reliable to get my missus back on side! I know its a problem poll but how many of you have had no majors?

Bought an '06 TD4 manual less than 3 years old. Don't do many miles per year so it ain't getting worked hard.
I expect it to last and to keep the major expenses under control by regular servicing.
Don't think it's any worse that most other makes and better than some - you gets what you pay for unless you get ripped off. ;);)
Be careful (or lucky) and look after it and the missus should be on-side.
Our's belongs to the missus and she only lets me have a go occasionally. :):)
Would advise the EGR, CC breather and Synery2 route as the performance and MPG improves and Millers to keep the injector gremlins at bay. :):)
If it ain't broke don't fix it!!
Oh and get a TD4.

Back window packed up on Saturday in the pooring rain and I was told on Monday that I needed a complete unit by the spanish garage doing it. I knew different though after reading on here and checking Ebay. Had a quote of nearly 500 euros to do it . Just bought a kit on eBay for £30 even if it takes him 3 hours to fit it, which it shouldn't thats way less than 500 euros!

ECU forgot immobiliser codes after removing battery

Back window puts itself down now and then

sunroof catches when closing

SRS airbag light has come on after exhaust was changed - wont go off

engine managment light is a permanent feature no code showing :S

just running it into the ground now lol

Bought a TD4 auto in 2003, had one injector go after 3 years, last year had a rubber mount on rear axle replaced? wear & tear.
Plus 1 set of tyres & 1 set of disc pads in the 8 years. had it serviced every year by main dealer. Just sold it with 77K on the clock.
Can only say; It was a good car and did me well.
Just bought a 2006 model Ser 1 facelift model. Am looking forward to many miles of enjoyment.:)
