O.k. I am a little shocked some Freelander owners do not know this. All Freelanders shipped to the U.S. have 3 working brake lights. The center above the tire and the 2 in the bumper. The ones on either side of the tailgate ( the ones you would expect to work ) do not light with the brakes. I know, odd. So if you are expecting to see the normal lights in the rear to work you will be waiting for a while and chase a problem with no answer. To date there is no explanation as to why these are disabled on U.S. versions. It took me some digging as to why mine were not working before I found this explanation. So yes, chasing grounds, bulbs, shorts, switches, and aliens living in your normal brake lights will come to no avail. You cannot fix it if it is not broken Sorry if you spent hours chasing down this non issue. If anyone can find out why they turned these off in I.S. versions please let me know.
Oh, all this explained there is no reason that with a little edgenuity this cannot be fixed (or unfixed depending on your point of view) If you want your non brake lights to be brake lights then anything is possible
