it could be the g sensor these are comon it is under the centre consol that goes over the hand brake it is actually called the gravity sensor as it senses the braking and aceleration they cost about £60

I'm intrigued are we speaking of FL1 or something else here ?
I've just went through the Rave disc and looked through the Haynes manul and searched E bay for this elusive important item but it aint to be found or mentioned.
Maybe you could expand a little on this revelation..........

The longitudinal acceleration sensor (sometimes known as ‘G’ sensor) is mounted in-cab near the centre-line of the vehicle alongside the handbrake lever. It provides additional information to the SCS ECU regarding vehicle motion, to corroborate inputs from the wheel speed sensors.

The signal produced by the longitudinal accelerometer is used by the ABS ECU to check the plausibility of the vehicle speed signal. Where the vehicle wheel speed sensors tell the ECU that the vehicle speed is faster than the actual vehicle speed

I've got one of them too , but that's not what the wife calls it.......:D

Thank you kind Sir for that info as it is another avenue to follow in trying to extinguish those three bloody amigoes who are laughing at me on nearly every trip just now.
 
thats why my three amigos were on the wiring on the g sensor had come of when I mover the console out of the way to renew my handbrake cables and all the time it was just that in the end i took it up to a landy place and paid £48 plus vat for them to tell me if only i had just checked that everthing was back in place but I never knew about this sensor

Yup. I don’t mind peeps reposting links to stuff I’ve uploaded but if it’s on more popular site it can kill my account bandwidth. If it hits the limit they all disappear until a new month. Can’t trace them as easily without paying, so they’ll get deleted instead. Also Photobucket will be able to sell more mugs…
 
Well spent the afternoon with the FL up on 4 axle stands trying to get to the bottom of these 3 amigos.
Early model so 2 pin brake switch, HDC switch rewired properly, all 4 abs sensors checked statically and showing 980-990 ohms , all 4 reluctor rings intact ,free of rust and secure on the shaft+ blown out with compressed air to clear any dirt .I also went through all abs connections + earth and cleaned thoroughly.
Fault still there with ABS + ETC illuminated upon ignition being switched on and engine started and then amber HDC lamp comming on as soon as car moves off. Fault still intermittent though as sometimes the car is OK with all lamps operating in correct sequence between starting and stopping engine irrespective of time/distance .
Removed centre console to check ABS ECU accelerometer and lo and behold nothing there , no wires ,no modules , no holes for said item . I googled " freelander ABS ECU accelerometer " and after some searching I came across a thread that sites it " under the cubby hole at the handbrake ".
The only powered components I have on my late '99 5 door are a power take off and handbrake switch.
This , I believe , would imply that it is not fitted to early FL1's .
Interestingly no sellers on E bay selling a "freelander ABS ECU accelerometer" .
Does anyone have a photo of the unit , preferably in situ , so we can establish where and when it is applicable in the search for a solution to the 3 amigos ?
I think it's important that we clarify this as the 3 amigos is a very common problem on these cars and we already have misinfo re the replacement brake light switch being a universal culprit and solution when the early FL has only a two pin connection.( I know because I bought the later switch with mod'd connector on the strength of that advice ).
I'll get it into a friends garage this week and get it on his scanner to see what codes show up and take it from there .
 
C1220 is the accelerometer or G sensor. Rave description includes it in both early and later systems.

A good code reader is the way forward.

Plenty of instances of replacement ABS modulators to clear the three amigos.

Also sometimes cracked reluctor rings appear OK until shaft removal. Often though they will trigger unnecessary abs activation when slowing for junctions but you don't report that.

I can confirm that that unit is NOT fitted on my car nor is the required mounting brackery affixed to the handbrake or any wiring loom in and around the handbrake similar to the photo . On mine the handbrake switch is positioned under the lever mechanism and the power take off loom runs directly on to the socket.
I'll take a photo of my installation tomorrow and post it up.
Re the ABS pump , when I last had it interogated the print out said that a number of valves were at fault . If it says the same again then the ABS pump and ecu will be changed out ,I'll get to the bottom of this yet......

Ok given what you said I checked again and see that age is relevant. I have just looked at an older version of Rave in the connector list (1998), did a search for 'accelerometer' and got nothing so as you say there isn't one on very early models.

According to the later Rave it is present on both Teves Mk20 (passive sensors) and later Mk25. I'm only guessing but they may only be on those very early models with the abs ecu located under the seat rather than those with the ecu on the modulator.
 
My car has a Wabco ABS system fitted with the ECU placed under the passenger seat . This I am certain of as I'm awaiting a new Wabco ABS pump to replace the faulty old one.
As I said earlier I was fully expecting to find the Accelerometer where described but it just isn't there . I looked under the car to see if there was a loom that I could follow to another possition perhaps but believe there is nothing there.
Reading that link is does say that it was fitted post year 2000 and that the earlier car had the Wabco system , implying that it wasn't fitted to said system.
Unless it's fitted adjacent to the ECU but I doubt that as it would be off centre .
I'd be only too delighted to find one fitted if it resolved the problem.:)
 
I can only see 2 part numbers in microcat. SSB101330 for up to vin 2A357439 and SSB101331 from vin 2A357440 onwards. Could be the sensor in yours is within the ecu/pump perhaps. My 2001 v6 allows a hawkeye to read data from the abs. It uses the MK20 too. Has a g sensor in the list. Value changes too when moving. Rave ses it has a sensor:

My VIN is YA501**** .
When it was plugged in the unit had a number of methods of reading codes , several of which we tried to see if there was any difference .
I do recall that the CAN option would not communicate .
I just had a look at the print outs we have and the unit is a " Smartbox ". Unfortunatley the print outs do not identify the comms option selected.
The communication selection page had the above CAN option along with OBD and OBD2 , I think, but the option we used just had the Landrover logo .
I intended to use the Smartbox myself this weekend to familierise with the operation but I'm afraid a heavy cold has put paid to that......
If all goes well I'll be fitting a replacement ABS pump , two front sensors and a couple of U/J's this week so I'll open up the old ABS pump ( it's scrap anyway ) and have a look see. I'll also take the protective plate off the ecu mount and see if there is anything identifyable there .
 
did you get the '3 amigos' sorted yet? - having same problem - tried most of what you've done - even the mechanic who does some of the work for me is baffled

I think it will be Teves MK20 as yours is an early TD4. This option became available for the first time on the TD4. However, if you have hawkeye connector BA 5077 then you may find you can use either MK20 or MK25 options but it may be a case you don't see all or correct data/info available. If it can't talk then it just won't go further into the menu. If it explodes then you should have used the other option.
