Hi guys, need some help with the fuel gauge on my Freelander. 2002 K series

It used to only ever read FULL, so I bought another pump, replaced it, and now whenever it feels like it, it will randomly go to either full, empty or an actual reading (1/2 tank)

I tried swapping it with another sender unit (known good one), and it is exactly the same.

Thought it may have been a dodgy instrument pack, so purchased one 2nd hand, and again, still the same.

Has anyone else ever seen a fault like this? Starting to think it could be a wiring issue

sounds like wiring issue especially next to where you replaced pump as this is when your fuel gauge started to fluctuate,maybe corroded connection:

my wife 1800 does it never bothered looking at it though until she askes me to she never goes on long trips it is only a work and back car

FWIW, I took the instrument pack out again, and the gauge started working, so I think there may have been a wire damaged behind the dash someplace...

Cut the wire out, and ran a seperate wire the the pump, which has fixed it

I have similar issue with my gauge. It had a new filter fitted then only read from full to 1/2 and anything after 1/2 read empty. Yet today after filling it up it now still reads empty. Can you buy just the fuel sender switch thing on the pump or do I need to replace the whole pump?

You should be able to measure the resistance of the fuel level sensor where the electrical plug connects, in order to work out if it the level sensing is the problem, or the wiring/connector at the other end.

Fuel level sensor has likely failed. They are quite fragile when they get old.

Can you replace it or is it a new fuel pump/sender unit?
