Incidentally few people are aware of the 'retail item, not fit for purpose, six years to claim' rules. We recently got for my son a replacement TV which failed after 5 years, however it cost £3500 new so it should have lasted longer.
 
The new oil rail which many treat as optional on Rover cars is much more important on the Freelander application. It is a must if you want to ward off a repeat failure.:eek::eek:. This is because the Freelander has a bigger problem with block stiffness due to the way the 4WD transmission is mounted on it.

Just a quick update on the prices of the parts from LandRover - the price of the gasket set seems to have gone up quite a bit! The prices I got quoted from two different LR dealers yesterday were -

Oil Rail -
LCN000140L
£29.87+VAT (£35.10 inc VAT)

Gasket Kit (gasket, shim, 2 steel dowels) -
LVB500190
£46.35+VAT (£54.46 inc VAT)

There have been 3 reported failures of the new MLS gasket (BW5750), the gaskets were returned for inspection but no results of the testing were reported back.

All claims were rejected as the uprated oil rail had not been fitted in any of the cases. TAKE NOTE!!!!!
 
Is there any way of telling that my engine has had the factory mod. I have been told it was done...but without detailed service history that could mean anything.

My k-series has done the 20k since hgf July 2006., No oil rail change just the MLS gasket ;)

Any of the older threads were 'lost', I see it is working again...................for now :p

Maybe the 'no matches' pun was to stop the tratta boys from torching the petrol FL1 with a gallon of petrol

my twopence worth, while engines continue to be manufactured from materials with different thermal qualities, ie. steel and aluminium, we the buying public will continue to have engine failures, you only have to look back at past failures, triumph stag, dolomite et all the others with steel/ ally components, and time after time manufacturers get away with it and we are left with the bill.

Fink you need to fink again,the K series is all alloy,and the others you mention are cast iron and alloy - not steel.Cant be bothered to mention any others but the TDI is a shining example of a reliable unit with both materials used.
