Well done for the reproduction anyway.
Shame the OP didn't mention he was working on a LHD V8 at the start.:(
Just done the job on my RHD 300tdi, after a brake test front axle lock up dropped the difflock in and it wouldn't come out. Been meaning to get around to freeing up the selector lever for a while, but this incident forced me in to action.

i removed the center colsol on my disco 1 to have a look as i thought it was seized and this is what i found

is it me or does that look different

I know these posts are quite old - but just wanted to thank all that posted, really came in useful.

I got away quite lightly, after 2 years of non use (it didn't snow much last winter!). I took a slightly different approach to step 1 (brute force option) after a soak in plus gas - I had a second person below the car putting pressure on the lever, as I was in the car pulling on the lever. Then when it did go in, we had to do the reverse. Several pulls and pushes later, and a load of 'plus gas' later, and all was back to normal.

This is worth a try before taking apart, the second person makes a world of difference (I'd already tried it on my own the weekend before)

I will now use monthly, promise!

Thanks Again.
Lee

I also have a diff lock that won't engage. The lever moves freely left and right and engages hi/lo ratios. I crawled underneath this afternoon and fired wd40 all over the linkages but still haven't made progress.

The problem is that lying underneath I can't see much at all to work on it. One end of the C link is visible and I can feel the other bits but how the hell are you supposed to work on it? Other than cutting a hole in the transmission tunnel like the Youtube vid I don't know what do do. I managed to get a spanner on the nut but didn't have enough room to move it. Is it safe and necessary to unbolt the drive shaft? And I kept getting grit drop in my eyes. Grrr
