Let me get this straight.
Hubs need to be engeged and Yellow knob pushed down to engage 4X4?
And the Red high low range pulled back to low to disengage 4X4?
Do i need to dis-engage hubs or are hese ok left engafed?

So many questions I know but I am new to this and eager to learn.

red lever forward, yellow knob up = 2wd high
red lever back, yellow knob up = 4wd low
red lever forward, yellow knob down = 4wd high
there is no 2wd low mode
to dis-engage 4wd high, pull red lever back then forward (yellow knob will pop up).

do all changes stationary, with clutch depressed.

free wheel hubs will need to be engaged whenever you want 4wd. they can be dis-engaged when going back to 2wd.

never use 4wd on tarmac.

Except when pulling away from a standing start while towing a very heavy trailer on a very steep hill. Then 4wd 1st or 2nd gear stay in low until safe to return to high ratio.......you'II only suffer from transmission wind up if you turn to many corners, which is what damages the transmission....;)

No they can be left engaged, although obviously you will get no benefit from the, but in this weather I would leave them engaged, otherwise every time you come across conditions when you need 4WD you will have to get out and lock them.
 
on my s3 i can have 4wd in high range only. 2wd i can have high or low range

Then there's a major problem with your series why would you want 2wheel drive in low box?? the whole purpose of the low box is to assist you across rough ground or up & down steep hills or when setting off with a heavy load. which is also when you would want 4 wheel drive. did you read this post from trewy??

i have had 2wd low....... i left the hubs disengaged :D
