I'm going to plead ignorance when it comes to the passive immobilisation, never heard of it before, it's only recently started doing this, and I've had the car 10 years or so. I'm not sure about pressing the open button to start engine either I'm afraid, the fob didn't appear to be having any affect on the vehicle until I re-synced it.

Check the RF receiver in the offside rear quarter under the plastic lanel that holds the rear parcel shelf, if it's the MK1 or MK2 it is susceptible to interference from many sources.
