Hi there I'm attempting my first engine rebuild and i'm a bit stuck as to how to get the 8 large flywheel bolts undone on my 5 bearing 2.25 petrol engine.

The Haynes manual kindly says "remove the 8 flywheel bolts". The problem is the engine simply rotates no matter what angle of position I attempt.

I thought of putting the head back on with lots of rope/ rag inside the bores but I'm worried about breaking something.

Can anyone shed some light?

wedge a large screwdriver or small chisel in between the starter ring teeth and the engine casing.

Thanks Treworgy, are you from Treworgy near Looe in Kernow by chance?
I'm up at Wadebridge.

A windy gun is the answer or jam in a piece of sacrificial wood in where the starter motor fits, jam it up if you can

I used a flat screwdriver. about 1/4" blade, seemed to jam very easily. Just enough to get the bolts off.
I Just worry about damaging the bell house or the flywheel ring.
