The (flashing) engine light came on on my 1.8 freeby tonight and car felt like it wasn't running on all cylinders:confused:
It was fine this morning when I drove it.
anyone had this problem?

The only thing i done was yesterday I cleaned the engine bay with degreaser etc...could I have "soaked" something

tonight I have sprayed some carb cleaner into the air box and a couple of tubes around the injection area.
 
You could get the codes read. see if it comes up with a fault,

Sounds as if you could have done something, shouldn't do it any harm though once in a while after getting mine very dirty the engine bay gets a light mist over with the power washer.


Try going out side in the dark, While the car is running have a look around the engine to see if you can see any problems. i.e electrical contacts breaking down and spark jumping from ht leads to block
 
Flashing engine light means catalyst damaging misfire.

I would advise to check coil packs, HT Leads etc for fluid ingress

Everything looks fine bud:confused:
 
Oh...just had it ticking over and when you give it some gas it sounds like it is sucking in a lt of air... as if there was cone filter fitted (only comparison I can think of)
 
After cleaning everything again...light has stipped flashing it just stays on now...it runs fine picks up well so back to normal now apart from the ligjt...what could this mean
 
Shows it has stored a code. Needs to be turned off, maybe dried out and no harm done.

There is a way to turn the mil light off by rubbing the two battery leads together. did it several times on the golf. Try searching for it on Google (not the best way though)

Noooooooooooo.........

this will cause a big flash, followed by a lot of heat and aggravation

by all means try by connecting the battery leads together once the battery is disconnected, but never ever connect or rub the battery terminals together.

yea gods it doth astound me

Good point. Me saying half the story again. Don't do it on the battery. Try a search on google for the full process
 
Ok guys light is now out...I disconected battery for about 30min while I cleaned the plugs and covered a lot of stuff with carb cleaner to dry things out then done all of the electrics I could see with wd40...light now out:)
its now booked in for timming belt, tensioner and water pump aswell as gearbox oil change and ird.

As a query how difficult is it to replace engine to gearbox seal as it appears I have leaks around the engine sump and gearbox to engine.
