how can this be so difficult?
I bought a pair of Britpart front mud flaps for my missus’s 90
They are mounted using two threaded holes in the front outriggers, but no fixing bolts came with the mud flaps.

Nothing l tried fitted, l took a bolt off the front mud flap on my 110 but it wouldn’t screw in to the thread.
In fact trying to screw it in broke the captive nut free, fortunately l was able to get a pair of pliers inside and grip the captive nut to free the bolt.

So that was 45 minutes of messing about and the mud flaps are still in the garage.

So then l tried to fit the new folding side steps, only to find that there’s a bar attached from the side step to the chassis that needs a special tool to inset a captive nut.
(being an XS it’s clearly only ever had tubular side steps, but they were missing)

So they went back in the garage as well.
At least the kettle worked and l got a cup of tea off the missus.

Threads could be unf or unc, unc favourite with the yanks
Captive nuts are also called rivnuts and can be fited with a bolt a nut and some washers, vids on youtube

Like Lynall said, I had the same issue, google a YouTube vid called how to insert a rivnut without a dedicated tool, get a selection of rivnuts (hexagonal type) from Screwfix, insert the right size one and any matching m bolt (the right length) will finish the job off, I used the black ones to match the bracket, looks the dogs

Thanks for the advice

I managed to do it, these rivnuts are hexagonal in shape so stay in position, so l put a bolt in with a nut on, held the bolt with a spanner and tightened the nut against the rivnut.

This did the job, so now at least the side steps are fitted.

Dont forget to slather the bolts in grease before fitting them, as removing bolts seized itno rivnuts can be a right toss.

Done!

I also managed to fit the mud flaps, goodness knows what threads were in the existing rivnuts
I fitted new ones.
