how you guys been keeping ?
long time no speak :)

Alright Mr hippo, nice to see you've upgraded your new motor and unit!!

All is good this end, still messing on but now with a bike, but will change to a Disco when I'm allowed, Mrs wants her's changing first!!!

You got any pics of your new'un like!?

I shall be replacing my old cd / radio with a new double din unit soon.

How many wires are there for the steering wheel remote?

Are they easily identifiable?

Nice to catch up with you again. good to see your still on here, and your freelander hasn't been scrapped yet or the doors haven't fallen off :p:p:p

nice bike, been anywhere nice with it ? traveling like ??

DISCO ?!>?!

well i hope that's at least a disco 3 ? (newer shape)

then you will have the same costs as a range rover ! :D

I must have spent 5K on mine since owning it. not all because things break, mostly due to doing some upgrades etc...

:)

I have taken out my old bog standard cd / radio from my Landy and was suprised to find that the aerial plug is a small stubby connector.

Modern radio units need a longer aerial plug.

Is there an adaptor available?

dog-man

OK, I have sourced an adapter.

I now have another slight problem.

I have worked out which 3 wires on the LR plug are the steering remote wires but am not sure where they would go on my JVC plug and adapter.

On the adaptor there 3 x wires that are not connected to anything.

1) A blue / yellow clearly states "Steering wheel remote" comes from the back of the plug that goes into the JVC radio, but where does it go?

2) A red has a fly lead with a connector at the end. Looks like it would take some sort of bullet shaped plug.

3) A pink comes from the plug socket that will take the LR plug with what looks like a metal connector at the end as if it just clips (grabs) onto something.

If nobody can help with the wiring, am I likely to cause a problem if I just trial and error?

I guess the worst I could do is blow a fuse?

dog-man

Yep my alpine unit needed a separate little box which converts the 3 wire steering control signals into a 2.5mm jack plug which the alpine head unit accepts

Don't trial and error !!

These are the pictures I've taken on fitting the reversing camera to the rear door.....

Excellent post, thanks. I've fitted my head unit and got most of it working thanks to the advice in the thread but I have a couple of questions if anyone can help.

1) I have a wire from the head unit marked "reverse camera" which I presume has to connect to something in the loom when reverse is selected. Hopefully this doesn't have to connect near the reverse switch which sounds like a pig to reach? I'm wiring the cam on the back end to the reverse light and the AV cable is routed through the car but it needs the "reverse camera" lead connected I guess. Came with no instructions either!

2} mine dodn#t come with a cage so I had to 'remanufacture' the one from the OEM headunit which I got away with more or less. What did others do re- the cage? I didn't want to fork out £40 for the ones I've seen online but can't see any elegant solutions.
Thanks.

HI swatch

i think the reverse cam just needs a feed when reverse is selected so why not just run a feed back from the reverse lamp when running the av cable through?

as for the cage...my head unit came with one so can't help there :(

I finally got round to fitting my reverse cam yesterday. After a lot of headscratching with the back panel I sussed it all out, connected the cam to the reverse light, routed the AV cable through and fired it up. At the same time I decided to put the tailgate window down (for reasons I cant remember) and just as it started to descend I realised I hadn't tidied the wiring fully and knew right there that the window would rip it out on it's decent so let go of the rocker switch but the window continued to descend. I turned off the ignition and it still continued to descend right the way down. As a result I have a bunch of wires now ripped in two by the rear screen. I think it would have all worked too. The moral here is to finish the job properly before playing with your new toy! /me off to find another camera...
