That's a quality one too... they might have fitted the cheaper version available for a fiver! :doh:

I wish i'd seen this post earlier... I'd have told you to leave the hub nut spanner in favour of a hammer and chisel too!:cool:

arguing that price with them might be tricky... "i can get those bearings for £7 each on the internet, why did you charge me £33 each?".

all they'll say is "that's what we charge"!

I might be able to use that in combination with the fact that they've not touched the swivel balls though.
 
Just ask em what brand of bearing they fitted, not just on the internet - my local(er) place only charge ~£10 for the decent ones ;)
 
is it also relevant that for the first 10 miles home it pulled quite hard to the left under braking? I pulled into a service station after 10 miles to make sure it wasn't the camber or anything and phoned them.

they were more than happy for me to come back there and then to have a look at it, but having reversed back out of the parking space on full-lock left, it seemed to sort itself out and has been fine ever since. They did take the right caliper off, so is it plausible that it could pull to the left for the next 10 miles??

Looking at the state of your calipers, I wouldn't be too surprised to see the pistons in a grotty state to match the outside. It could be that the pistons are slow to travel due to the extra friction so after he pushed them back the right caliper wasn't doing much until you pushed a tad harder on the pedal...

The most expensive part is going to be a genuine Land Rover part. I'd phone my local dealership and ask for the parts dept. Get a price on a genuine one, that way you know the absolute maximum they could charge for that part. Ask them did they fit genuine or after market bearings? The more knowledge you have the better armed you will be when/if they try to bull**** you.
 
ok, that's basically what they said (but in a more "polite" way, if you know what i mean). i'll ignore that then.

so... in summary, my questions for them are:

1. what brand of bearings did they use?
2. why are the swivel ball filler caps untouched?

that's basically it... isn't it?

I'll make sure I phone a Landy main dealer to ask for the price of a bearing. if it's the same or more, I won't argue too much, unless it's not genuine.

As for checking the wheels for play since getting it back, no i haven't. i'll try to do that tomorrow during my lunch break if I can.
 
it coukd pull to the left yes, if your right caliper was a bit stuck or there ws a bit of oil on the disc etc etc. if its ok again now its probablky just a quirk - nothing major if its gone now.

looking at the breakdown of prices, youve not paid far too much for what theyve said theyve done, its more a case of have they done what you asked.

if they havent done the swivel balls then it needs doing and you shouldnt pay any more for labour just to check them cos your 2 hours is plenty. if they have done them, then we need evidence to explain how.

not a cheap job but then not a cheap garage.

the cost breakdown has helped me see they that they havent ripped you off as much as we first thought, as such, maybe they just forgot the swivels.

fair enough, check/top up whatever, see what happens.

if they believe that ball is ok then fair enough, matter of opinion. i disagree, but there you go.

i would be going back and saying that you dont hink the swivels have been checked, can they make sure.

also mention youre concerned about that swivel ball, are they SURE its alright. that wil be confirmed when then show you how much oil is in there.

all is not lost at this moment i think.

again, if they say swivels have been checked, need to know how, cos its pretty obvious they havent i reckon.

were they supposed to check gearbox, transfer box and diff oil levels - check the filler plugs for signs of being removed.
were they supposed to grease UJ's? If so check them

If you dont feel you can, then ask them to show you them and prove that they did, because as yu can prove they didnt do the swivels, you want to be satisfied that they did the other work that they said they did.
 
you cant argue with the prices of the parts mate, yuve already paid for them - in paying you agreed to accept the prices!

yeah they werent cheap, but thats high street prices.

you'll know for next time. ask the brand, but dont argue the price, nothing you can do now, would just ne nice to know, and hopefully theyll be quality items at that price.

You missed the post where he saw the grease around the nipples and the drip of oil from the diffs then MHM?!
 
you're right... i've not been charged for swivel ball renewal, and not had it renewed. other than 2 hours maybe being quite a long time (although they did have some trouble getting the bearing out) and the price for bearings being quite high, i've pretty much been charged for the work that has been done.

i'll phone them tomorrow (after finding the price for genuine bearings), and ask what brand of bearings they fitted and how they checked the swivel ball oil levels.

i think thats the jist of it now fish.

youve paid out quite a bit because its not a cheap garage, but thats been and gone now.

only concerns are, as you say:

1. ok, ive paid a lot for bearings, i'd at least like to know they were good quality, to make me feel better.

2. were those swivels checkd, if so, how? if not, please can we do it again. can i see this time?

that swivel certainly looks (and sounded) pitted with rust.
oh - and yu need a new rear diff nose oil seal - dead easy to do yoself :D.
