Getting close to the point in my 90 rebuild where I can start the engine for the first time after completely rebuilding it from the bare block up. Looking for advice off anyone who has rebuilt engines about the do's and dont's when starting it up for the first time. My engine is a 200tdi that's had new rings, crank bearings and pretty much all seals and wear parts replaced.
Any advice or tips would settle my nerves a bit about the first big start.

Disconnect stop solenoid and crank in bursts untill the oil light goes out.
Reconnect and take a deep breath and ....Go for it.
I've had to do it 4 times now and I still worry even though it's never gone wrong, just the odd fuel/water leak.

Turn key it starts job done, no need to make a meal out of it.
I doubt it will fire in an instant so enough time for the oil to get around.

I disagree. My rebuilds have always started quickly, 1 off 2.5nad and 3 off 200 TDI.
The NAD was a big surprise, started right up with no glows , I hadn't disconnected the SS as I figured it would never fire without glows before the oil light went out.

I'd agree with just starting, lets face it, when you're rebuilding crank shells etc, you're using much oil/grease etc to put things together! So long as all orifices are closed and lubes filled, it'll be reet ... ;)

My last one started and ran, smokily and slowly, with the timing out 180 degrees ... quick fettle and it just worked .. ;)

Good luck with it. I'm hopefully doing the same thing in about four weeks time, all going well!

I oiled everything up when I built mine and fired it straight up. Alot say to let the oil pressure build up however mine had oil in the bores from fitting the rings and fired straight up. It fires straight up still then the light goes out

Thanks for all the replies. Good tip about the stop solenoid. The recon'd turbo came with instructions to turn over the engine without firing it up with the oil feed pipe off and let half a litre of oil out before running it up fully so that answers how to do that.
I've seen you can get special running in oil. Any point using that or just use the standard recommend oil?

Mine was turned over by hand, oil pip to turbo off, then turned over with battery injector pump disconnected, when oil coming out turbo pipe , connect fuel pump but loosen front injector pipe until fuel comes out.
Then use preheat and be ready to shut off

when I rebuild commercial engines allways fill filter oil filter with oil I made aconection to go into oil pressure taping in block so that I could pump oil through a filter into block and not try to start engine un till you see oil oozing out of rocker shaft have you primed oil pump with oil I have seen sombudy fit brand new crank in a perkins 6354 and run a big end shell because they put oil pump in dry i don't expect you need to prime block like I do but the first start up uoy want to get oil pressure up as soon as posibel
