Hi,

Following on from my thread from last week (here) - I've stripped the top end down again, rockers and valley gasket off, all looks ok with lifters pumped up and hard - all I can find that I wondered about is this:-

the cup is loose and has a little up / down movement (not much) the next rocker has some movement but much less, I can't feel any movement in the rest of the rocker cups although some will rotate.

I'm struggling to believe this would make much noise, could it be the guilty item??

Thanks,

Dave

Loose inserts were a fault item on the earlier V8's, and they can make quite a loud ticking noise.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the reply; I've just about got it back together again and will find out tomorrow if this has resolved the problem. I cannibalised a rocker from a complete spare shaft and cleaned that up and fitted it - also swapped the lifter on that pushrod for a new spare so fingers crossed.

If that doesn't work, the running in oil is coming out and 20w50 going in and then I'm going to run it either with the rattle or hopefully without.

Cheers,

David

Just to let people know that replacing that rocker and a couple of others has fixed my problem. Because I had two spare lifters I swapped the lifter on that rocker as well... mainly because it was sitting in a pot of oil and ready to go, but I can't see any problem with the one that came out, and I'm only mentioning it because I'm still struggling to believe the rocker was making the noise which was like a lifter or manifold blow.

I've seen something about a service bulletin, and after a look around I found this:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
29.04.98 Bulletin No 0009 and CD. Ref?) L8428bu
Covers V8 engined Range Rovers from VIN WA 382672 - to VIN WA 391018,
Discoveries WA 753113 -WA 769495
Defenders(carbed only) VA131591 -WA 140244
They states the noise came from the bad rocker arms. They all had a cast number(the number at the side of the rocker arm).
The bad ones have the last number: 17 or 18 or 19 or 20
