hi guys and girls any help much appreciated

discovery 2 td5 2001

basically when I turn on hrw and mirror heaters the "number 8" 30amp fuse blows straight away...I have the boot door card off at moment as just unsiezing rww and need a new stud welding into spare wheel carrier ,so I have disconnected hrw and inspected wiring but still the fuse blows straight away.

basically my next cunning plan is to remove both front door cards to unplug mirrors to see if this stops fuse blowing.

both mirrors adjust and fold in from switch.

driver side looks original but passenger looks like cheap replacement glass.

so my questions are is my cunning plan pointless, which mirror to start with or any better cunning plan would you recommend to a newbie.

thanks in advance

Its most likely going to be a wire shorting to earth, so you need to start from power supply (relay) end . Have you a wiring diagram so you can get colour codes and woork out plug connector locations for access to the circuit at various points and then its process of elimination . You can disconnect the end items eg HRW and the individualk mirrors and then try continuity to confirm earth path short theory . HTSH

First :welcome2:, then you should try to download "RAVE" do a search on here, I am pretty sure there is a link to a download site, It gives you the landrover workshop manual with all the electrical drawings, connector idents and earth points. Its much bettter than a Haynes.

Have fun

You will "have fun" trying to decipher Land Rovers wiring diagrams in Rave with all it's cross refs. and links to other drawings. Only LR and Jaguar could produce such diagrams which would be unacceptable in any other industry :)

cheers guys...just wondering if any member has had the same fault before I started taking the door cards off...:)

Very true...all part of the challenge....it's great to own a landy

trust me i've seen alot worse

don't think you need to take off teh full door card just plastic triangle covering the mirror mounts..
look for the brown and purple wire that's the heated mirror feeds.

a faulty or damged mirror could cause the fuse to blow.
if you have a bulb in a holder fit two wires to it, remove the fuse and place the bulb in place of the fuse, when you find the fault the bulb will go out..simples

...any tips for popping cover off :)

U dont have to take the door cover off to unplug the mirrors

Unplug the mirrors and check with a multimeter(ohmmeter) between earth and both pins of the connector(toward the car wiring) one pin must be closed circuit and the other open(with fuse out) If u'll find closed circuit on both pins of one plug there's the short somewhere along the wiring(usually where the wiring enters into the door)...if not leave them unpluged, put the fuse back and push the switch... plug them one by one and see which one blows the fuse... though the mirror's heater element used to interrupt. If it will blow the fuse even with mirrors unpluged and the circuit is fine at the plug it means the short is somewhere before the relay and we'll speak again.

cheers sierrafery

unplugged both mirrors and hrw and fuse blows when switched is turned on so will look for broken wire in new year..:)

Unlucky, did you find a link for the "rave" landrover manual, and as said before the most common spot for a wire break and chafe is where the runs though the flexible conduit into the door, all that opening and closing flexing the cables.
