Hello everyone. I've got a 2002 freelander 1.8.
It's just had the hg done and cam belt clutch etc, the only problem is that the ecu won't turn the fans on when needed, apparently there's a fix for this.
I've been told about wiring a switch on the bottom rad pipe.
I've also heard someone mention a kenlowe stat
I have searched the forum and seen some similar posts but not really any solid answers. So I'm appealing to you freelander owners that may of come across this problem and rectified it.

It can take a while for the fans to come on, it may be that they don't need to come on. What sort of distances are you driving?

If you take the connector off the temp sensor and start the engine, the fans should come on at full speed, at least this will tell you if the motors are working.

Thanks for the quick response.
Yea ive taken the temp sensor off and they run at full speed but they don't cut in after an hour of running it up hot.
My mate had a freelander and his used to cut in after about 20 mins as did mine on my old rover I had.
The guy I bought it off told me the ecu not telling the fans to come on is a common problem, the last thing I want to do is drive my new motor around without the fans working when they should.
 
After doing the previous post's check have you tested the actual sensor as sometimes it can be faulty. May help
 
I'll try and have a look at what mine does tomorrow. When you say it's getting hot is that what the temp gauge is telling you or are you physically checking it with a thermometer of some description? Is your bottom hose getting hot?

Yeah the coolant is circulating nicely, the stat has opened up and the bottom rad hose is nice and hot. Just no fans kicking in.
 
Ok mate, I'll try and have a look at mine tomorrow. I'll see if I can get the resistance readings for the temp sensor as well (cold and hot). Was the thermostat changed when the rest of the work carried out?

Do you have access to an OBD reader? The live data will give the true engine temp.
Don't forget that the rad used in the 1.8 is also used in the V6 so has a massive cooling capacity. It's entirely possible that the engine simply isn't hot enough to require the fans.
 
Do the fans come on when you put the AC on max and re circ?

Is so they may be fine.

If not I remember the rover 75 had an issue with the slower speed fan and a resistor burning out but not sure if it's the same system.
