Hi, I have a Series 3 with an Defender 110 2.5 petrol engine fitted.

I have recently had an electronic ignition conversion put on which has improved starting and power, which is great.

However, over the past few days I have noticed a popping coming from the exhaust. This is most noticeable when I take my foot of the accelerator until I come to a standstill, tick over seems lower as well. There is no loss of power when accelerating.

Anyone know what this might be?

Exhaust leak likely at the olive where the header pipe joins the manifold, or at the manifold to head gasket. Third possibility is a crack in the manifold, but more likely air leaks letting in enough oxygen to cause combustion of the exhaust gases.

Tighten stuff up and it should go away.

Popping is usually it's too retarded on overrun. Check vacuum advance, timing and try giving it just a bit more revs at trickier. If you knock the idle too low the ported vacuum is cut off and so no advance. You can tell if it goes away if you feather the throttle.I set mine so it just does it on steep hills

Sound advice here in above posts, do you also find when turning of the ignition when engine hot it runs on slightly too?

Dominic/Steve, thank you both for the advice will try.

Steve, yes it does tend to run on a bit when it does it. Strange thing I only get the popping on about every third trip. Rest of the time it's as good as gold.
