hi all hoping you can help me mines a 1990 3.9 efi would the exhaust from a 3.5 fit as it sounds better and im wanting to get that lovely v8 burble any help or advice is much appreciated

I think so. You may have to change some mounts and you may have to use the 3.5 manifolds too if your down pipes and y section won't mate up.
A different back box is probably all you need to get it burbling

Why would a 3.5 system sound better than a 3.9? I'm given to understand that the exhaust fitted to the 3.5 'carb version burbles better than the same lump with EFI (which I run) but I don't understand that either - not being sarky, just genuinely curious.

Good point. Carbs do sound better if that's what you like. You've got to remember it was an executive 4x4. Doubt a nice soundtrack was what they were after. Best sound I had out of the rover v8 on efi was Rimmer Bros cat back ss exhaust on a 4.0 defender.

I think its because the 3.9 system is a single pipe all the way through but the 3.5 was a single pipe to the middle box then it was a twin pipe so it burbles like a v8 should

When it comes to V8 4x4's in general my favourite was the soundtrack of a 6.2 GM diesel in an ex USAF Chev Blazer - lovely low revving burble with just a hint of diesel clatter. God, I sound like an old tart now!

The burble comes from the eneven firing order of a cross plane v8 not strictly the exhaust setup.
Carbs sound better but not much in it. By example a tvr 400se used single exit and efi but sounded fantastic so its really all down to silencing and where that silencer is.
Auto box behind any v8 spoils the sound imho.
Best setup on 3.9efi is to have a centre glasspack muffler and straight pipe then to tail with no rear box. Lose the middle box and it gets boomy and annoying.
Best bet is to put a 5sp behind any rv8 and it will sound good.
