Hi there and thanks in advance for replies, sensible or not :)

Today I visited one of those places that buy and sell ex MOD stuff.

They have a good selection of LRs, Series and Defender in various states, right from "growing in a field" to fully refurbished, MOTd and on the road.

I would prefer an S3 and they are cheaper than the Defenders but a fully refurbished, drive away S3 is five and a half grand plus VAT!

Now this seems a lot, but they are classed as 1 owner, I wouldn't have to get my hands dirty and they will build/refurbish it to any spec I want.

Questions

1. Do you think that a refurbished ex MOD S3 LWB would be a good buy?

2. Would I be better off buying a 7 owner civillian one and spending money having it refurbished?

Nowadays I am less inclined to spend evenings in the garage with skinned knuckles and oily cups of cold tea.

I have enough on maintaining my motorbikes.

A fool and his money are soon parted.

It's an incurable disease, which is why I hope to collect my 1969 lightweight on Saturday ...

Ere Roxxo...

Would you be working on Honda Blackbirds by any chance???

Not my new one :p

Hi Coddy, how you doin?
Do you think we need a LR section on the Bird forum?
Let's get Rhino involved :)

Didn't know you were into these wonderful creatures known as Land Rovers.

£5k!!!!

I paid £900 for my S3 LWB 9 years ago. Major jobs since then being:

3rd 4th gear synchro (within 1 month of purchase) £75
refurb of carb £80
timing £50
new stainless steel exhaust £150 - although not all fitted yet as downpipe is not yet 'worn out'.
new rear cross member 3 years ago £300
new brake pipes (work not finished) £50 for parts.

All up, this works out at about £200 per year capital cost.

£5k is too much dosh!
I got mine for £1500 a year ago - rebuilt on a galv chassis & converted to LPG. No issues whatsoever. In fact I've spent around £80 in bits and bats that needed doing and it's just sailed through MOT with no advisories.:)

Thanks for the replies ATO and Steamcoaster.

5.5K + VAT = 6.5K Defenders at 6750 + VAT.

Jacksons of Misson near Bawtry. They are on an old MOD Rocket site. Fascinating place.

A truly amazing amount of the folding but they are refurbished to as new condition.
These guys have many, many more landys starting at 100 quid for a hen house.
There are vehicles for all tastes and pocket.

Most require a strip down/rebuild and I aint got the skills or patience.

These folk are very nice and very helpful.

L. Jackson - for Ex. MOD and NATO Disposals

I have been to Witham Specialist vehicles but there again I would need someone with more mechanical/vehicle/Landy knowledge than me to stop me buying a dog

Help.
Anyone got a decent ex MOD 109 for sale?

Ello Mate :D

I do indeed think we need a LR section on the BB site, methinks a PM to Rhino and we shall have some fun ;)

I got a 1972 Series 3 SWB, some piccies in the gallery somewhere, have put a 2.5 NA diesel lump in it, still gutless, but great fun, bought mine for £500 on ebay, but have spent the same doing it up such as doing away with truck cab and putting a body on it, engine swap, overhaul brakes, second hand rims with Colway tyres, ahem etc etc etc

Evenin'

I don't mind doin a bit of refurbishing/maintaining but total rebuilds are out.
I just want an S3 to pootle about in locally.
I have just rebuilt a 1977 Honda CB400Four and I am in the middle of transforming a Kawasaki ER5.
Been out to MRM Land Rover near Grantham today. 170 mile round trip on the Blackbird. Beautiful.

OK then chap, here's what you oughta do:

*Go to Jackson's and have a good look at what's there.
*Go to Witham's and have a good nosey around.
*Decide what LR you want.
*Then go look in Military Vehicles Jeeps Tanks Militaria, all ex Military equipment and see some realistic prices.
*Also try these people: EMLRA :: Index for info and such.
*Go to some MV shows and see what's for sale (although the show season is winding down now, so if you're desperate to buy a Rover right now there's not much going on).

Have fun

Heidi Hi Gareth.
Pardon the pun :)

Was Heidi fitted with a diesel originally Gareth or was she petrol?

Thanks for the reply and thanks for your website. Inspirational!

Yep, she's always been a gazole burner. All Laros in the Dutch Army were diesels. We had trouble insuring her when we first got Heidi, coz there wasn't an option on anybody's database for 24V diesel. All the "experts" were saying it had to be either 24V petrol or 12V diesel. Ho hum!
Anyway: glad you like the site, it's just our little bit of fun. I was bored at work one day and started writing a bit about our latest trip abroad, and it just sorta grew from there ;)

A couple more questions re 1984 109

1. Unleaded.
Is the head ok for unleaded or do I need an upgrade?

2. LHD insurance
Is insurance dearer for LHD vehicles in the UK?

Apologies if this is the umpteent time you've seen these questions.

Many thanks in advance for replies.
