guys thanks for all the advice, working this week so will crack on Friday with suggestions. I will try the 12 volt new supply first and check i have 12 volts, at terminal i checked the relay with a maplin relay tester ( the green relay nearest driver)

is it not just a normal 2,5na or 2.5td starter?

first off thanks to everyone for the advice you have saved me buying a new starter (on my budget that is a big saving)
so up date i checked the white wire with the red stripe going from the spade terminal on the solenoid to a rubber multi plug was ok using a meter then i pulled the spade terminal off the ignition switch and repeated the test with one probe on the ignition switch terminal and other probe still in the rubber plug all ok

so i then followed your advice and ran a wire from the ignition switch to the spade terminal on the solenoid RESULT she turned over an fired up, but i had to switch off as it sounded like the solenoid was still in but making progress so good

next question am i right to assume the solenoid stayed in because I had bypassed a relay or something by running the wire to the solenoid? Please can some one tell me what size wire and type I need to buy and the female connector for the rubber multi plug and does it need to go into a relay as I noticed when I looked behind the dashboard that their are two silver relays which click when you turn the key on? Sorry lots of questions but new to land rover and electrics

Yes you did bypass the relay between the ign switch and the solenoid. However, there is nothing to prevent you from making it permanent by running a 2mm wire from the sprung-return 'start' terminal on the switch to the solenoid.
The solenoid does not require a heavy load for long periods, and that's the way mine is now wired up and I have no problems and just to be safe, I also fitted a 10A in-line fuse.

Thanks for the help yes that is my quick fix but I want to put it back as it was when left the factory, even though I tested the relay would it be worth try a new one before I start running new cable to the starter relay I assume this is the big green one nearest driver

Just for the record live in Northants, but from black country so now hurt my feelings as very proud of my ability to use large hammer to fix many problems
