Excellent stuff, thanks for the tips.

I've now decided to try get a 200tdi or 300tdi 90, with no quarms to age or condition (well within reason) amd bring it to a good condtion, but perhaps less modified engine wise to help me out with insurance.

Can I ask, is it possible to fit a 2007 or 06 defender dash (with all the heating e.t.c) so I can get heating up to scratch?

Are there any aftermarket heating kits available, as it is winter, and freeeezin :D

The chassis has drain holes in it to allow water to get out but on the downside this can also allow mud and other rubbish in and one of the main causes of corrosion is what is called poultice build up where you get build ups of damp mud on the chassis or body panels

Correct.......trapped water becomes the electrolyte which dissolves the zinc in the hard to see bits. Engineering solution would be to prevent that water/moisture getting trapped in the first place, but them we are talking about 'Land Rovers'.:)

It'll cost a frikkin fortune to go and put all the 08 dash into a older landy unless you get one salvage - also I think (but dont sue me if I'm wrong) a lot of the switches etc are digital and not capable of handling the currents required on the older non-siliconised circuitry. I think the heating system is quite different too. Oh and the new bonnet is flimsy as.

The money you'd be spending - why not just get a new one on lease if the dash and bonnet do it for you so much? Depreciation is low especially if you haggle well on the purchase price- theres a guy on here who can get em cheap. I got my td5 so cheap that it was 2 years old before its book price was what I paid.

I may take a look at a leased model, but been self employed, taking on another voluntarily overhead would be a calculated risk.

I really do like the 07 model though. If I did get a leased landy, is it against the contracts to modify it?

Theres contracts where you can modify a bit - most modifications are bolt-on-bolt-off affairs so don't actually "modify" the base vehicle.

Theres the HP ones where you pay a deposit, pay off half the vehicle monthly and then either hand in the vehicle after 3 years of pay the rest off (either with cash or finance).

Other options are remortgage if you own a house.

Personally I'd just buy an old one you can play in, leave the dash as is and if you want sommat on your bonnet, have a spare wheel. If you get all excited by a new dash, you're sucked into the "new-dash-every-two-years-make-the-old-dash-models-****-and-owner-feel-crappy" trap that all modern cars are designed to create with each new model year.

anyway - when I was 17, if I modified a car it'd be uninsurable. is thatnot still the case?

hahaha, thanks for that, I better calm down over the dash then :)

My mum will be insuring it in her name, and I will be a named driver.

Its not fraudulent or anything, because she will use it more than me, once its clean inside and out.

Anyway, for a reasonably modified 90, from the 80's, and me insured as a named driver (on a provisional liscence too ) its £850 a year.

I'm not complaining, as I have mates who pay into the 1000's for little Fiat Unos and such.

Anyway, I think all my questions have now been answered, so thanks very much to everyone who replied.

I really appreciate it :)

Look at something like an eberspacher diesel cab heater -bit pricey but massive amounts better than standard and you can set some of them to come on via a timer so the cab is all toasty before you get in!

On an insurance note, I made the mistake of being a named driver from being 17 and whilst it was good in that I could have much bigger vehicles than all my mates and still only pay similar prices on insurance, it took until now (i'm 25 now) before I could manage to insure any half decent vehicle in my own name reasonably and that's with 8 years driving and a clean license! Food for thought.

Somehting to check though is whether the insurance cover will still be valid if you are using the vehicle for business use, usually it's just the policyholder.

Galvanising is not actually corrosion resistant, zinc looses electrons quicker than the metal it is applied to and oxidises. The zinc is slowly consumed over time, but as long as some remains it slows down the disappearance of the metal parts
what bollocks!

galvanising is a process originally used to describe sticking electrodes into dead frogs and making thur legs twitch. it over a period in time came to take on different meaning ranging from eltro-plating of any metal to its more common misunderstood meaning of zinc coating by means of 'hot dipping'.

zinc , like aluminium, take on white coating when its is exposed to an electrolite such as rain water ,sea water etc. when it is damaged to the point of bare steel showing through does it become sacrafiacial and not before

Hot-dip galvanized steel has bin used for more than donkies years. the main advantage of hot-dip galvanizing comes from the corrosion resistance of zinc, which, in most uses, is a fook sight better than iron and steel.the meer fact is is stuck on steel acts as a barrier between teh steel and the nasty **** that causes rust. zinc stuck on as a hot-dip galvanized coating, cathodically protects exposed steel. the main reason its is used, or one of teh main reason is its cheap and cheerful. in that it requires no maintenance.

Im also 17, and recently got a Td5 90 HTop, now StationWagon.

Trying to keep out of trouble with the Td5 can move quite quickly when required (80+), been totally reliable so far, for almost a year now.

You just get used to the lack of heat, though it's not too bad, just start it 5mins early on a cold morning to get some heat.

Thanks again for the replies.

I am reasonable happy now as my Land Rover defender fund is going to swell by over £5000.

So thats gone from £0- £5000 :D Hopefully i can pick up a nice TD5, or a good nick 200tdi, 300 tdi ;)

you should get a decent tdi for that money, and a reasonable td5 HTop.

A reasonable td5 H Top would be a great starting point as something to customise/improve.

First thing I did, was stick some windows and some seats in the back.

I have been considering that option, as I note the hard tops are a little cheaper (and will give me more room for adveritsing should I choose to leave it in normal config)

I'm quite excited now, as I can drive as soon as I get it insured, obviously with my scared mum next to me :D

My mum won't get in the Landy with me, and I've recently passed my test. She hates the thing! My dad's the complete opposite, leave the keys lying around and it's gone. Drove it into central London one day without me knowing.

Who you planning on getting insurance with? I'm with farmer's union, with the policy in my mum's name. Not allowed any modifications!!!

I cant quite remember the exact company, as it was through tesco compare or something, I better check modifications, ther was a little tick box, I believe I selected it...
