Hi my 300tdi disco broke down yesterday , the rac man came out had a quick look and said the timing belt was broke?

So is it always the case that the engine will be damaged ? Or is it lucky sometimes and fit a new belt and of you go.? And how would I know this?

I've spent a small fortune on it
It has
Snorkel,a bar, light bar and lights , rear spot, ladder, terrifirma 2"shocks and springs, blocks on rear, huge tyres with 5 black weller style wheels in very good order, its a xs model it's manual with 97k on clock had recently a complete new floor professionally fitted, aand moted for 10 months

Been offerd 950 as is including the original alloys , so shall I sell or is it worth more? And should I split I don't have any cash to fix it unless it's under say £200

Any advice ideas would be so great fully received

The engine will be damaged but not seriously and you should be able to get it repaired by an independent within your budget.

Reddisco,

Have a look at the "cambelts" thread that was written over the last few days, in the defender section, may be of help to you.

Cheers

'Spending a fortune on it' for accessories doesn't negate the fact that it still needs to be serviced, if it was overdue a belt change then you probably want to look at all the other routine maintenance that may have been overlooked (engine, gearboxes, diffs, UJ's etc). If your belt failed at fairly low RPM then hopefully damage will be minimal and within your £200 limit

The truck was regularly serviced and had fortune spent on it , not just on accessories thank you ****erman, had complete new floor, new bearings and ball joints gear box oil,new discs and belt was done around 80k was doing around 20mph when it stopped

You've been getting good advice so far, the bold above will leave you wide open for a ripping. ;)

Well I didn't take to kindly to the suggestion that I'd spent a fortune on bits and neglected the essentials when he doesn't know the facts bit rude to suggest this

Well 'Reddis cocks' ;) if the cam belt failed after 17 k then something wasn't done right.

Perhaps, but your first post didn't suggest this, I for one was thinking along the same lines as Kwakerman.

I had it happen just bent 1 push rod and snapped the rocker shaft! Fixed the lot for under 100 doing work myself! Drives great and has done for the last year with no probs!

Exactly.

Either the maintenance hadn't been done in the past or the belt wasn't fitted correctly.

Don't be a dick, listen to the advice given, dismiss what you know to be done and go from there.

Reddicock stop living up to your name, either wind it in or #### off. Your op was all about how much bling you have managed to tack on to your obviously neglected disco. I understand you are hurting right now but don't take it out on those you turn to in this hour of need, of you are skint sell some of the bling and put the cash towards the repairs.

Tend to agree reading this
I Dont think you needed to take offence mate
You were advised if one item had failed having recently being done by someone other than yourself can you be 100% sure they did a propper job ??

I would for piece of mind get the other items checked over
Good luck with the belt, fingers crossed not much damage has been done, however if there is, it can be rebuilt
Even if that means selling the toys to fix it
