Think I may be selling my defender soon as I need some money in the near future and I got a lot tied up in what is essentially a toy... but I shall be getting something else, it will be a green laner/minor expedition vehicle as I don't really do many P'n'P's anyway, not decided what yet but my current top choices are:

Disco2 4.0 V8 - noticed these have dropped below £2000 now and it would be nice to have the comfort of the Disco2, the lack of rust (as long as chassis is OK) and V8 power!!!

Shogun 2.8TDi SWB - Really like shoguns and the spec is great, rear locker as standard, all guards/shields, mounting point for winches already in place, water tight! Only let down by front drive shafts and lack of parts available, I do have one major advantage which is a Mitsu trained 4x4 specialist working for me who knows these inside and out

Some sort of old series - prices are a lot lower but they are old, weak axles, weak engines e.t.c. and windy, damp old beasts

I can help but think a Shogun would be the best budget 4x4, OK the front suspension doesn't get the articulation but the rear does and its got a locker anyway plus they drive better on road, are infinitely more reliable and look the part as well, that said a Disco is no slouch, easy to maintain and a Disco2 has some nice comforts plus V8 POWER!!!

I would get a landcruiser 4.2 loadsa power, lockers, strong axles/trans, comfort, easily moddable..........landrovers are pants really

Spent the day at Center Parcs today.
Very little snow, but a very slow and careful drive back.

Steering has become very vague at speeds over 50, not to bad when accelerating, but scary on overrun. Its always had a bit of play but seems to have got a lot worse all of a sudden.
Pulled over and no leaks were apparent and the level was normal.

Have you checked all the ball joints, tightened up the box? and checked the trailing arm bushes and panhard rod bushes?

Thanks for the list Mikey. I havent checked any of them yet and TBH I lack the facilities, tools and skills to do much more than fluid changes.
+ not having the company car anymore means I need to keep on the road.

I might have a chat with Tim @ Mansfield on Monday see what I'm looking at.

Could just be poor road surface. if there is nothing standing out, might be worth waiting until they dry out.

Unfortunately not. Had the same along several different roads.

Well you know your always welcome to pop down the workshop and give it a going over.

Dunno what all the fuss it about. Steering was vague on Tiny for 2 years and never caused a problem. In fact stuff only used to go wrong after I repaired one thing lol.

Lots of snow today, but after last night i really CBA to go out LOL
On the plus side, the weddings booked lol

I hope it carries on all night so i can stay in bed LOL
Cheers for making the effort to come today Brian, its much appreciated!

Plenty here in Horkesley now. And Colchester Council have maintained their excellent record of not gritting the roads when they need gritting, so chaos will reign in the morning, no doubt.

What's the betting the snow will really #### up getting to my job interview tomorrow. Fingers crossed the Astra gets me to Earls Colne in one piece and on time.

Just done a airport run in the disco and the roads were horrid was the only one on them most of te time. Even the a120 was a shocker totaly white and deffinetly down to one lane got through ok of cause. if we get more over night it will be a nightmare in the morning
