Guys,

Need to tap into your font of knowledge here. I am looking at an entry level winch that will see moderate use, mounted to my 300 tdi 90.

my price range is about £350 for the winch (although i would buy second hand for a better model!)

any advice or thoughts on the below?

the contenders so far are:

Champion C9500EWX

Superwinch LP10000

As a trader I was recently talking to a fellow trader who sells cheap winches.

Yes he sells cheap winches but if he wanted a reliable winch he would go for a Warn or a Goldfish winch!

So do you actually need a winch? IF you need a winch go for a reliable winch!

If I wante a reliable winch I'd stick with superwinch. We find that the brakes and clutches fail on our warns.

What, when, how and why the winch will be used also contribute to accertaining the type of winch best suited for the purpose.

ive got a goodwinch tdsi goldfish,my trucks an offroader ive had the winch submerged many times, plastered in mud, when we had the snow it was covered in ice,the winch has never let me down,i stripped it recently to grease the gears up etc and to my surprise inside was still like new,i really recomend these winches

8274...but you will have to fork out a tad more than £350

the winch debate will be forever ongoing
pay your money take your chance its yr dosh

Hi there, I used a Superwinch until some some scumbag thought they deserved it more than I did and helped themselves to it by un-bolting off the bumper and bolt croppers on the leads. The reason it was a Superwinch and Goldfish, with welded bolts and a bar over the top of it, the scumbags won't find it so easy.

David Boywer, the boss of Goodwinch, the importers of Goldfish winches has them built to his specification and he swims or sinks by his reputation. TBH I would not buy anything else.

Actually I don't get a bung from Goldfish

Cheers

i suggest spending "moderate" money for a moderate winch, scriping will leave you with a useless dead weight on the front of yer motor wen ya stuck. Spend good money for good stuff .

Or get a tirfor. Ill get me coat.....

i have a superwinch lp10000

have had it since april 2010, so whats that, 16 months.

has been good basically.

i now run it with a synthetic cable, and it manages ok with a heat shield for the first 7 wraps.

had a situation where the gearbox got ery noisy after it ran submerged in mud soup, but after a few good douses through ponds and rivers its quite acceptable again now.

still works relibaly, plenty of puff to pull a disco. contactor isnt the best, sometimes gets dicky after hard use, should really fit allbright but cba.

would i buy another, yes if i had to, no if i could find a better winch second hand.

if you have to buy a entry level winch that might last longer than the cheapest non brand ****, then id say go for it.

remember however that a superwinch lp1000 is still a chinese made winch rebranded, it might just be a better quality chinese **** winch than the uber **** chinese ****.

hope that helps.

Got myself an old Champion C10000G-S (had it 5 or 6 years now I think) was about the price range you're looking at and it's had moderate use (some self-recoveries, other recoveries and work on the farm - pulling trees etc).

I haven't given it serious and regular dunkings but it's let me down yet (touch wood).

didnt you miss out a vital word there:D

Champion 12000 lb winch from winch solutions. 3 years old used 3/4 times per year. Never missed a beat.

I think most winches apart from real expensive warn and goldfish are made in same factories in china and who ever orders them just puts on their own label and appropriate mark up.

If I was regularly doing winch challenges sure a gold or warn but seeing I dont it suits my occasional needs to pull someone out of the mud.

I think I`d avoid secondhand unless you know the guy you are buying it from and how its been used/looked after.
If its light occasional use then give David Bowyer a ring, particularly if you are fairly local to him ( if memory serves he was in Devon) - he comes across as the "go to" guy on winches . You could also try Peter Harris Mayes on 01923 711800 (SW Herts), he was doing what looked like a good deal on a Superwinch (can`t remember the model) when I was last there. And no I`m not on commission.
For anything more serious I would save up a bit more - another six months without a winch is better than six months with a winch that isn`t up to the job, that you can`t sell on and are`nt happy to keep. To tide you over, if you really need a winch, you could always buy a Tirfor type hand winch - it will likely be equally useful once you get your electric winch, and if you buy right and look after them they last pretty much forever

I have a superwinch ep9i and a tds goldfish. I bought the superwinch some 5 years ago and last year I had to replace the motor. I bought both from goodwinch and David is the best person to talk winches. He will only sell you the best suited winch for your application.

On another note I was out with some people who had bought so cheap import winches off eBay and when they got stuck they only needed one remote as the frequencies were the same which I fun quite funny. By the end of the day my superwinch was being used to pull everyone as the cheap winches had died or overheated. After this I vowed never to buy a cheap winch. 3 months ago I bought my first goldfish and intend on buying a second and moving the superwinch on to my laning disco

i have 2 YETI winches from winch it on ebay, and i think they are great had one 3 years and the other a year n half now

my mate bought one of them 12000lb chinese winches with the orange casing, on our first laning weekend after he fitted it the gearbox case sheared in half!

QUALITY!!!
