Oh bloody hell mate , bet that really made ur day, Not
every German vehicle I've had has been crap, took them weeks to fix the engine, they even delivered it back to my house with no engine as they said they were short of space and thought I wouldn't mind, when I said I would be billing them £50 a day for storage they quickly collected it. It managed about another 500 miles before the gear shift seized in third, after that was fixed it twice suffered brake failure. I sent it to British Car auctions before the warranty ran out.

Always thought German cars were very reliable , blimey u didn’t have much luck with that one and not surprised u got shot of it , what model was it plse

Gobsmacked that they thought it was ok to deliver it with no engine

The only Porsche I heard bad things about was the 924 , followed by the 928

A mate long time ago had a 914 in bright green and was LHD , rapid little thing , well until he wrapped it round a tree , lost count the amount of times he wrote of motors , he had a lovely BMW 3.0 CSL, that very nice indeed

Never had a scratch on him and ended up dying from meningitis in his 40s

Hi

Looks like you’ve been taking it apart already as indeed know u wouldn’t have bought it like that

Please tell me that’s not an auction number as if it is you’ve got no come back what so ever unless there’s some form of return policy

My concern is for example u replace the engine and then find out the suspension doesn’t work or water has got into the electronics

Got Fingers crossed this goes well and is something simple , but can see if it is an engine ur looking at a min of £3k before u sneeze

Would u mind saying how much u paid for it please, of course tell me to mind my own business if u don’t wish to
Yes I took the front bumper grille headlights off hoping to get rads out the way to check the belts but it seems a long process lol anyway got the auxiliary belt off so no problem in that area but ran out of time because I was going away.
Yes bought it from Copart salvage £4600 including fees my bid £4100 without keys so classed as non runner sounds crazy right but I thought it would run after programming a key to it which I got done but as I’ve said wouldn’t turn.
So it appears I’ve lucked out on this as Copart said they don’t guarantee anything and basically said you’ve bought it & should’ve checked it! However there was no way of checking for this as they don’t allow you to plug in diagnostics or do an RAC type check just a simple visual. And there was no mention of mechanical damage. Which if there is then this means the car wasn’t described correctly. Because I wouldn’t have bought a mechanical failure. Anyway a lesson learned. I’m actually still in dispute with them over it but doesn’t look good for me. So hoping next weekend will be a good news weekend

I have a diagnostic Autel tool and didn’t find any timing related or crank sensor faults stored on ECU maybe I’m panicking a bit but we’ll see by next weekend

Worth more without a key for them. Like how P38ish it looks without the grille/lights :)

3.0 CSL is wonderful engine, terrible ride

Lol that’s Exactly my argument with them. I believe there was prior knowledge of a mechanical issue starter just clicks but won’t spin even now as I’ve removed it but the bolts were already lose so someone had already looked at the starter motor.
Then all the keys had been deleted from the cars ECU. But we quickly got that sorted.

Hiya

Plse don’t panic as indeed we don’t know 100% what’s wrong

Didn’t realise that also about the key , many thks for sharing the price, for that year I would have paid around £2k with all those unknowns

Sounds like they may have cleared the diagnostics

Also would have thought they should have said if it had a blown engine

Getting the roads out are indeed not a 5 x min job , u can replace the engine with the body on, but if u have the facility lift the body off as u can then treat all the chassis etc at the same time, checking suspension etc etc

But no point worrying until u start going through it , didn’t mean to put the fear of god in u ref the engine but strong possibility

Enjoy ur week and plse let us know on ur return

There’s plenty here to help and plse take plenty of pics

Will ur autel re program keys , as can find some on eBay for around £40

EDIT , just seen you’ve got key sorted

Hope that’s helped a little and what’s done is done ,

It was a 944S. I also had a BMW325 from new that used 5 litres of oil to go from Brighton to Birmingham and back, according to BMW it was normal and would improve as it got run in, needless to say it got worse. I currently have a German caravan and that is crap too.

If copart listed it as a non runner then you aren't going to have much luck pursuing 'not as described'.
My suspicion is that the keys were missing to stop any attempt to try & start it & conceal the engine problem.
Chances of finding out who did that are slim & I can't see you getting anywhere even if you did.
If you can't turn the engine at all in either direction then it's either seized solid or the crank's snapped.

Yep that’s my thoughts too anyhow I’ve got the challenge now
I still think this car should have been described as mechanical damage. By the entrant as it hasn’t come from an insurance company it’s come from a trader!!!!
When I enquired by phone they said it hasn’t got keys as stated therefore classed as non runner. like I said before in reality this is a lesson well learnt for me.

On German cars lol I have two Porsche’s, Audi TT, & a VW T4 Transporter All mechanically Excellent & Very Reliable. But have desired a RR Sport since launch, I think they look great compared to the standard RR but was aware of issues with 2.7 so steered away. Wish I had bought 4.2 or 5.0 SC now

Friend of mine learned a valuable lesson buying a car with the keys missing, he bought a Mercedes which had one key the other had become mislaid.
Couple of weeks later he woke up and the merc was missing from his drive, no trace of a break in or any sounds during the night.

Indeed however today’s keys are programmed & if you ever do come across this situation make sure all other keys are deleted from the ECU before programming a new key. But having your car stolen from your drive without the added drama & trauma of a burglary could be seen as a blessing these days. My son having recently been such a victim & losing his Audi S3

A couple of years back, My P38 had a "Seized" engine which turned out to be a setpin from the thingy on the flywheel that tells the engines revs had come undone, rattled around in the bellhousing and jammed between the flywheel and the bellhousing. Was easy to find after dropping gearbox.

I had a 325i from 1993, best car I've ever owned

Yep, the roughest 6 cylinder engine I've ever come across with feck all low end torque, the 6 cylinder engine in the Iveco truck I drove to France was smoother. The only plus for the P38 is that it was cheap and all the info is available to fix it. On the other hand, none of my Jap 4x4's have ever needed fixing apart from the Xtrail which kept failing under warranty. Another car that had to go before the warranty expired.
