I'm trying to read the searial number off my block for insurance purposes, I know where it is and how many digits it should be from Glencoyne's very helpful website http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/engno.htm; what I dont know is whether the final digit is meant to be a letter or a number, mines not that clear. Does anyone know?

Ta.

Wouldn't get much conversation going on here though would it it? Neither has this thread, mind. I'll have a look in the morning ;)

To try an answer your initial query I think they are all numbers. To the bets of my knowledge the only letter is the prefix at the beginning. But am happy to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable.

I think what you say is correct for some engines but not the 2.25 petrol / diesel engines. My V5 and block show 9 digits being 8 numbers then one letter, which tallies with what glencoyne say in their link previously referred to.:)

The ones with the indistinguishable last number are the ones that Land Rover sent to the the Royal estate. These had been stored at Windsor over the last fifty odd years but sadly stolen by pikeys in ninety eight. None of the vehicles had been recovered as everyone knew how they would be identified so kept very quiet about the stamping issue. The crown still holds a mandatory custodial warrant against anyone found with one. I’ve informed Scotland Yard you may be able to help with their enquiries.
