If there is no pressure above the piston, there is either pressure below it, or the crank or pistons have seized through lack of lubrication or clearances.
I'm guessing seized piston cos surely the pressure below would just be blown through the engine breather

Unless breather blocked......but then the pressure would just pop a hose off or blow oil from the seals somewhere....hmmmmm

I am leaning towards seized crank or piston .....

Maybe you could whip the sump off and take a look from underneath

Is the oil still liquid?

Veg oil in the engine oil can cause it to emulsify - i believe that will seize an engine. But does not explain it above the pistons.
When the engine was put in I fitted new oil and filter and have driven it about 140 miles to and from work this week

got the heap of she-ite to the side of the road....

Has the elastic band snapped? Did yer forget to wind it up? ;)

On a plus side I had stopped off at tescos on the way home and purchased a bottle of Jim beam devil's cut 90% sipping whiskey so at the moment I don't care about the heap of ****e :D

I'd go with the suggestion of removing the aux belt and then try turning it over by hand and see what happens.

I'm already upset pal I'm sick of the green badged piece of shat
See if you can get it fixed and take it from there. Turning with the belt removed will help to isolate the fault. This could be the last fix which puts it on the road for a long time. Failing that px it for a Freelander but expect to hand over an additional £7k in cash if you do. ;)

Just out of interest how many gaylanders could I buy for seven grand and a goosed tratter? I don't really want a different one for every day of the month :D
