Hello , forget fuel economy or lack of it what is likely to be the more reliable Disco 2 engine from say 98-2002 models and are repair costs similar ?

The td-5 or the 4.0 V8

Cheers

Hear of more problems with TD5 but bear in mind there is more out there. The td5s are good but still cant touch a good v8, td5 much mote noise and doesnt fell like its got any urgency to get anywhere. I run my v8 on LPG so give or take same running cost as as doozle but v8 noise and power! wouldnt have it any other way

My 3.5 RR had a few running problems but that was the old days, my disco 15 years old next month, engine wise has only had a replacement oil pressure switch, gasket on the exhaust and a water pump replaced last year.

I can afford to run V8s so gas is just for my bar-b-q :D

Thanks fellas , only need for short journeys towing but want something reasonably reliable with big torque ,

V8 is the only logical option then ;) and i would run my v8 on petrol if i could. im only 19 :p minimum wage i will stick with LPG for now haha

as i heard these have an even bigger consumption dont they? ...if you let it idle while you "feed'" it you'll get old near the pump :D

Bigger consumption than what? I don't know of another diesel V8 in a vehicle like the RR to compare it with. :scratching_chin:

i refered to the consumption in general, compared to the V8 disco 2, i have friends who made twice the same distance with a D2 than others with the RR

So a petrol V8 can go further on the same amount of fuel than a diesel V8, but the trade off is that the diesel had more torque and faster :D

:5bbanghead::doh: ...i missed the "diesel" prefix in your second post sorry...i was focused on the V8 thing and thinking to the D2:eek:

No problems , some great info here .

Would probably go for the td-5 if I hadn't read elsewhere about supposed engine problems ( can they really be that bad ? ) so edging towards the V8

Cheers

My Td5 has 180K miles in it and never had problems with the engine, it's about how it's used and cared too IMO

TD5 is a brilliant engine, look after it and it'll look after you, I wouldn't go back to anything less. It's quiet, reasonable mpg (31.2 with mine) and can of course be remapped for more power, or for more economy depending on your needs. I do a fair bit of towing (4 wheel trailer) and there's plenty of power, mine is bog standard apart from EGR mod.

260,000 miles, not trouble free (injector seals) but a great engine, had it from 60,000. Low 30's mpg, wouldn't go near a V8. EGR removed, viscous fan removed, catch tank for oil vapour.
