So here is the Sunday evening question

My 300tdi has just reached 200k - runs happily at 50mph and had annual services, oils filters etc.

What should I do to make sure the engine reaches 400k ?

Looking for 1 or 2 must do’s

How long did it take for the first 200K ?

Regular filter/oil changes will help keep the engine running, assuming you can still buy diesel.
I'd suggest that to keep it on the road over the next 25 years it may need a bit more than regular oil changes and an annual filter service though.
I'd also look at a new snake belt, timing belt (and tensioner), fling washer, water pump, thermostat, radiator and intercooler.
A full set of rubber hoses would probably not go amiss either.
A quick look at the compression will give you a clear indication of the state of the rings/head and valve seats.
Check the Turbo and see if you need a new CHRA too.
If you are in super pamper mode, send the FiP and your injectors off the Diesel Bob for a check-up and overhaul.

About £1500 to £2000, maybe a bit less if your Turbo is OK and you do most of the work youself.
After that you should be good to go with your normal routine.

I'd need to know more about the proper service history, but my first port of call would probably be injectors - obviously depending on when they were last changed..

2nd would be a watching brief on the CHG - LR specify 250K change - so I'd consider a pre-emptive strike, if it suits your plans..
 
Other than regular service the most important thing for a tdi or any other liquid cooled engine happy is to keep said coolant system in good order
Mayby more so for a 300tdi because of the high position of the water pump on the engine, any loss and whats left soon stops going around the block.

Thanks for the detailed reply, it has taken 25 years to get to 200k we have owned her for the last 5 but prior to this the service history is sketchy.
 
I'd start with a new snake belt, timing belt (and tensioner), fling washer, water pump and thermostat.
Then when you have the engine cover off you can really give the radiator and intercooler a good check over and replace if needed.
You will also be able to see the condition of and replace the hoses if required .....

The injectors would be next on my list (with a comptression check when they are out) followed by a FiP overhaul.
