Hi Team. Long time no see.
2.25 petrol engine needs to come out.😬 Head's already off. No3 needs rebore/sleeve etc.🤬
The Landy 109 ex mil is in an awkward position where I couldn't get a conventional engine crane in if I tried - and is on a slight downhill slope. Can't move it for various reasons.
The crux of my question is whether it is sensible to drop the engine out of the bottom, or must I pull it out of the top? Is dropping possible, or am i going to hit a serious snag along the way? I need to find a way that minimises brute-force manhandling because I am old and don't like pain and hospitals.
Your wise counsel would be very welcome!

One of them "get back to it jobs" Out the front is best after removing grill, radiator [can be done as one unit]
You will still need something to lift even just the block out. Perhaps make a heavy wooden platform where an engine crane can placed. with grill off you will not have to lift block very high.

No idea how you think you’d take it out from underneath. The front axle is in the way and you’d have to lift the chassis up way in the air to clear the engine once out.

Nothing is impossible, but that sounds like a really difficult way to remove an engine IMO.

No offence, but if the vehicle is in a poor position to work on. I’d have thought moving the vehicle would be the most sensible option. Engine blocks are bloody heavy. It’s not as if you can lean in and just lift them out by hand.

As tottot says make a level platform some 8x4 ply would help, but how far to get it to workshop
To strip properly and over what ground engine crane not good at distances unless ground smooth and level, the block itself manageable by two carrying it but not walking far , maybe an option to strip while it’s hanging on crane to reduce weight , a trolley would be useful

Sounds like a plan. Thanks for the insight. I have a block & tackle, so I'll create something weird/mental to hang it off, lift and slide out the front.
It's one of those jobs where I have to make do with the hand I have been dealt! 😂

Heavy! PITA! I have a hefty block and tackle, so I will create a gantry I think. Lift and slide forwards. Creative heavy woodwork incoming!

Yeah, I get you - but in some ways it would be easier to lift the front than hoist it out. I have jacks! But wiggling past the axle looks tricky.....
Moving said vehicle isn't an option. 🤬

I lifted the stripped block on and off a workbench for the mobile rebore man but even completely empty it was a fair umph.
Hope you get it out 👍

I'm making a huge timber crane - it's coming out whether it likes it or not!
When my big brother took engines out it was my job to stand on the inner wings with a rope slung under the sump and round my neck. In those days I had the umph to squat a few pounds. It used to take three of them to lift it off me over the front. The biggest one we did was a Ford escort though.

We swapped a morris minor engine and gearbox by the side of the m32 in 1978. Three idiot blokes, rope sling, scaff pole. All done in less than an hour. 😬😬😬
I was going to suggest something similar for moving the engine when you do get it out. I lugged a complete 200tdi around with 2 of us with it suspended on a scaffold bar on our shoulders. I was younger and fitter then and it was still not easy but would be achievable with a few extra helping hands.
