OK Riggaz, tell us WHY the man couldn't be more wrong.
You claim to be the expert ---- tell us WHY.

Then tell me why after over 140,000 miles on Tractor Universal my SAAB 900 Turbo engine is like new through and through, and EVERY engine in EVERY vehicle and machine here uses the stuff, has done for decades, and we have NEVER had an engine failure whether for oil problems or other. We just throw the stuff in, keep them topped up, and change oil and filters when we feel like it.

Riggaz laddie, you have no idea at all - you are boy bewitched by snake oil salesmen! You spout out their patter like a little tape recorder. You just do not know what you are saying!

The good news is there's a fair chance you'll grow out of it, or be cured some other way, like a combination of education and experience.

My TD5 Disco likes Ovoline Tractor Universal, and the nice man from Ovoline was most helpful when I spoke to him about it. "Just mind out when it gets below -25 degrees ...." and I can live with that.

My advice Mr Riggaz is to get EXPERIENCE before acting like someone who knows the score, because so far you are not impressing a lot of people in this group.

well Landy10,funny thing this oil, i'v been running my chainsaw on Stihl oil for about two years, this lubes the chain, then the other day i ended up talking to a construction site manager who is a qualified tree surgen with all the forestry exams you can ever wish for, he looked in my van and said " use normal engine oil". Well that cut my cost down and profit up and i am surrounded by the stuff, using fully synthetic thought might be taking the micci. Comma is ok, ran my P38 on it.
drugs! take a good look and learn ! don't do drugs otherwise yule end up talking bollocks like what poor kevin does.

( can anyone decypher wtf he's on.................about)

Well said there CharlesY

methinks he doth work for morris lubricants - e's always recommending them

Oil for petrol engines is cheapo wimp stuff compared to oil for turbo diesels.

Moral: Use an oil for turbo diesels in ALL engines .... the fact that its specification EXCEEDS the needs is hardly a problem.

And it is always a LOT LESS EXPENSIVE.

People who waste money on expensive engine oils for simple engines must have money to burn. Right Riggaz?

Petrol engine oil is cheapo wimp stuff and turbo diesel oil is less expensive ? That doesnt quite work, does it. lol .:D

I use diesel engine oil which dont have the petrol api figures on it. ussually sl these days. Got some in the shed which is petrol engine oil and that dont show the diesel api figures on it ch4 etc, so I woudnt use them in the wrong engines. But those oils suitable for petrol and diesel with both specs printed on, I would use in either. Massive choice out there, take your pick.:)

Sorry i was referring to the oil is oil comment rather than the halfords vs mobil 1, obviously you don't need mobil 1 in a simple engine. With regards to the universal oil, the first time we spoke about it you said it was a 15w/40 "It's a superb premium grade 15w-40 for turbo diesels. I would really like to hear your reasons for it being "the wrong viscosity" and so on. Do tell." which is why i said it was the wrong oil for your td5 engine, then you changed it to " I may choose an oil that is ABSOLUTELY IDEAL for MY car in MY hands in MY CONDITIONS, and that's a 15W/30 premium grade meeting every specification under the sun" it is impossible to meet every spec under the sun with one oil. Autodata technical info only recommends 5w/30 whether cold, moderate or hot climate so maybe LR have modified their recommendations since printing the owners and workshop manuals i don't know. You will know that if you buy your oil in bulk you can get a good price, you do it, i do it. The semi synthetic 10w/40 oil i get costs £1.40 a litre, more expensive i know but meets and exceeds the spec needed for my 300tdi and is the perfect viscosity for the engine.

It can only be the perfect viscosity for the CONDITIONS, not for the engine.

We are all far too obsessed with oils, and far too easily persuaded to part with outrageous sums of money for cans of (snake) oil.

You are right about the Universal ... 15W/30 it is, so when extremely cold it is slightly thicker, but at all other times it's exactly right for the TD5.

It can only be the perfect viscosity for the ENGINE in the CLIMATE it works in.

Your universal oil will have some (snake oil) additives in pal so it can meet manufacturers specs for such a wide variety of applications and if you bought it in 5 litre cans and not by the drum it would probably cost quite a bit.

Like you say, it will be fine for a TD5 engine in the UK climate, probably wont be as good when it's cold but i'm not sure whether it would offer the highest protection for engines that list a higher viscosity oil for our climate like my 300TDi. I'm not saying i would have mechanical failure from using it, more like the thicker oil will suit it better.

Fooking downright hypocrisy is what it is. I dint know whether to be outraged by his fooking cheek and about face. Or really pleased that we finally got thru to the fick ****.
