our 04 freelander just after starting starts to make a loud whirring sound from the engine compartment nearside, when it stops there are fumes coming from the small exhaust under the compartment near the offside front wheel, apologies for the lack of technical knowledge I cut my teeth on old army landys can anybody help

Tim. This is normal below 5degrees ambient temperature.
