Hi All, I am a new member and have recently bought a 1999 4.6 Range Rover. Recently I have had the engine management light come on, it is only on dim but wont go out when I start the car. I have had it in to a Land Rover specialist, who scanned it and reviled a transfer box fault. The gears go into low and high and it drives smooth with no clunks , etc. Has anyone any idea as its driving me mad now lol.

Thanks in advance

this wil have caused the fault code....I fink you just need to get them cleared now.....tek it to the landy people to clear the code

still check your battery because if you have one of the old reciever units in it and you have wireless around and about it'll drain your battery

Took it back to Landy this morning and they said that there was no point in plugging it back in as it would not clear the fault. I asked if it coulld have been the battery that caused the fault and he said that if it was the gear box fault it would have cleared it but not with it beeing the transfer box, and I would have to bring it in

Still no luck new battery seems fine, car goes in all gears as it should but the light is still on. Has anyone had a similar problem to this?

Thanks for the reply Stephen but I am new to Range Rovers and I am not sure how to do that ?

Thanks Barrie

I find the easiest way to check is by leving the drivers window open a fraction, and locking the car. Then look through the window and see if the Red light on the gear selector extinguishes. You can even sit in the car and do this.

If the light is on after 5 mins or so, or it goes off and comes back on then somything is waking the car up, do this test and see what happens and then go from there.

I have had similar problems and was related to this.

Hi, there is no Red light on the gear selector when i lock the car at all. I sat in it today for 45 mins and no light came on. Looks like im going to have to take it in as its doing my head in now LOL

ok, maybe not yout problem but usually error messages can be caused due to battery probs, when u sa in it was you parkedin your normal overnight position??

Well the next thing i would personally check is the earths that are connected to engine and body i thimk there are about 4 main ones, i was getting a gear box fault and it turned out to be a bad connection to the engine, i just found each one on the RAVE Cd an removed cleaned with enery paper, greased and put back and it was sorted, this also seemed to sort out other niggles as well.

Welcome to the joys of P38 Ownership i have wanted one of these cars since i go my licence, and have now had it for over 1 year and it has cost me thousands of pounds and alot of heartache. But i love the vehicle and now just have to get on with what it throws at me, i am ok with electrical items but no good with engines so the worse one for me was the headgasket, good luck keep us informed

Thanks I will check them. Would the engine managment light need to be reset after I added the new battery, or would it go out on its own. The landy garage said that there was no point in trying to clear it as it wouldnt clear before. would it be worth getting another garage to try and clear it

right, 1st things 1st, make sure the battery is good and that its being nicely charged when engine running, at least 14.2 volt (get ya self a digital multi meter for a tenner) and have a look at the earth cables, batt to chassis and chassis to engine!
the warning systems on a P38 are voltage specific so a dodgy battery or undervolt will throw up all manner of fault warnings, i recently had an issue with a 5 month old battery with a dead cell, i had g/box fault, abs fault, srs fault, flashng lights and gauges up/down on there own! just because of 1 bad cell in battery.
i dont think the trouble is your BeCM waking up over night as you havent mentioned any problems of a flat battery nature! next get it to suitable garage with the relavent tools to reset the fault codes and see if it comes back, (most indies will charge £40 to plug it in) any fault code loged in the memory can be cleared and as you dont seem to have any issues with the drive train i wouldt listen to the people who said its not worth it!
get it cleared and if it comes back then you will know to look further!
as far as there concerned it requires a new transfer box and there waiting spanner in hand and till open to do it, if after the fault code is still there you can bet your life you wont get ya money back...........
