Dec 2004 range rover 4.4 v8 vogue

Hi All,

I was recently in the isle of mann for the tt and one morning my rr said check coolant level. There was a mechanic 20 yrds away so I was in luck. I rolled it in and he topped it up with 1.5-2 ltrs of coolant. He said hope you have a leak because that's a lot. Anyways later that day I noticed a coolant puddle under the expansion tank and took it to a LR dealer on the island. I was told that the dealer had no parts in stock so keep an eye on it on my way home to London that day. he also told me that the mechanic had put the wrong coolant in and it should have been blue not orange. He said that it would be ok to drive home on but more than likely had done damage already. I was freaked and called my LR specialist at sayers on the a30 as I was prepared to get it flushed before leaving but he said it was fine and that it had orange to start with and that it was the early banger that had blue. Well I relaxed but now it has gone mad !! the expansion tank has a pin hole ****ing out fluid and the engine light is on !!! I have just ordered a new tank off ebay but am really concerned as to why the engine light is on. I topped it up with clear coolant from petrol station which said can be mixed with any coolant. It took 1.5 ltrs.

Ps I had this car given a major service only a month ago changing all fluids, tranny diffs etc. cleaned the pcv, new front discs and pads, etc etc. cost a fortune :)

I'll wager your engine light is a "Map cooling" fault caused by the heater element failing in the thermostat. Don't flap, just get the codes read.

I accidently mixed pink and blue coolant, made the colant a muddy rusty brown colour...no issues!

A few weeks later I was replacing the Radiator, so it all got flushed in anycase.

The two colours represent wether it has organic compounds in it or not, when they get mixed, the organic compounds breakdown and whilst is ruins the corrosion protection of the coolant (so flush it when you can) it won't have any effect on cooling efficency.

As for the engine light, if it is still running OK, it may just be one of the Lambda Sensors gone out of range momenterily indicating overfuelling and hence the Engine Light....I had this, a few days later it went out, or the cooling map for the electronic thermostat...no issue

You say Sayers is your local garage, I work at LHR so is only down the road from me.....you local to LHR then??

I am literally 2 miles from LHR
I live near Guildford, but work at LHR....

I have the RSW All Comms, so if you get stuck...you can either pop over to where I work (Near Hatton Cross - the company I work for has leased offices in the British Airways hangars by the old Coopers Crossing) and we can plug in whilst in the car park...or I can pop over to you.

All Comms only reads fault codes and resets them and recalibrates the Air Suspension...it doesn't read live data or change settings...but it has got me out of the mire a few times!

When I first got mine, I didn't think to check and topped it up with the wrong coolant an ran it for 12 months, I think that's why I ended up with a new water pump rad and thermostat. Or maybe just coincident I dno.

It should be OAT coolant though

Yeah the guy from the Land Rover dealer on the isle of man said it was bad and especially because they were ally motors. Hi implied you would be shortening the life of the motor significantly as a result. After these few replies I think it not as big of a deal after all. Did you flush yours yourself ?

I can pop over to you for sure, my local guy doesn't even have that sort of kit so the only other option is the stealers ! When are you about ? maybe pm me your number and I can arrange a time that suits.

I work Monday to Friday....so anytime during the day is fine, if you can't make during the day and only the evenings, I can hang around for a couple of hours after work until your free - I have plenty of work to do in anycase) apart from Wednesdays!

I'll PM you later with my number and we can arrange a time for Tomorrow if you like and are around!

Thanks for your help, It was definitely a relief to have the engine light cleared :) I have since had a bit of a saga which included doing a rad flush and snapping the knob to the drain valve off just after I had opened it enough to leak ! lol. I bought a new rad but spent hours trying to undo the radiator fan with no success.

Frustrated I jammed a flat head screw driver into the drain valve and turned it enough to close it. No more leak but not going to trust it. Bought the rad from gsf for £142 plus vat to then find them on ebay for a tonne !!

I managed to set off every code possible with the earth off the battery so am done for the day. I will have to put it in to a shop as I cannot get that nut loose and I got some real good hits on it. I don't know what crafty method the mechanic has got to loosen the nut off the fan but I am open to any ideas anyone has. I jammed some pipe onto a open ender and whacked her good but no joy.

Re viscose fan removal. Saint has a nice diagram of the tool you need . I made one myself from it , works a treat . I'm sure he will send you it if you ask nicely!

Hi DLM, sounds like you are having a nightmare of a job there....

The Viscous fan spanner can be fabbed quite simply...the dimensions and details are in my Radiator Replacement post in the How To section, as Paul has said.

I ended up removing two of the nuts on the other side as they did make fitting the viscous spanner a bit difficult....so I ground those off whilst leaving the two to engage on the pulley bolts....

I did say the plastic valve was a bit fragile, the ebay rads whilst cheap would no doubt not be a genuine Behr/Hella rad, and a Range Rover cooling system is not to be scimped on.

By No means a nightmare, we are in between houses so internet wasn't available at the new house where the rr was. Never less I watched a you tube vid on my phone of a chap doing it and there was no mention of a special tool being needed. He implied it was two swift taps of the shifter and walla she would be loose ! Now I know why he didn't film that exact moment. lol Haven't been able to get my hands on a download of the rave manual everyone speaks off so didn't know I had to remove the earth of the battery. I have every fault code known to Land rover on my dash now. Nobody commented on the link to the code reader, is it that new that no one has heard of it ?

Browse through the threads from a couple of days ago someone posted screenshots of his lynx system a few days ago.

Using the Laser Viscous Fan spanner you will have problems getting a good swing on a hammer to knock it off, and remember it is a left band thread!

The warnings are a result of needing to reset the steering angle sensor following the battery disconnection! Once you have reset this by turning full lock left hold for a couple of seconds the n full lock right hold again then back to centre should cancel the Air Susp warnings and hdc warnings.

I am on a training course for 3 days this week so back to LHR on Thursday if you want to borrow the tool i made!
