Well, I've done what Shifty wisely suggested. I've lifted the front end of the rocker cover just enough to take a peek underneath. First thing I reassuringly saw was a nice, shiny chain looped over the cam sprocket. But then I remembered what the main dealer service manager had told me: "You want to make sure the crankshaft sprocket hasn't fallen down the sump, as well, mate. It happens."
So I borrowed a neighbour to key the starter over whilst I observed and saw both chain and camshaft spinning merrily over just as they should. Result!
But now the electrical hunt begins.... :(

why are you mucking about? just get it on the diagnostics

The main dealer bloke said he could arrange that: 50 - 60 pounds tow-in charge. 100 pound an hour on their diagnostics machine ("it's non-portable, you see, mate"). 50 - 60 pounds return charge. But I'm ringing around at this precise moment trying to find someone with a hand-held code reader for obvious reasons....

BTW, I keep getting automatically logged out every 15m or so which is SO annoying!! Is there some setting I can change to get rid of this feature?

If you tell us where you are there might be someone with diagnostics close.

As for the logging out there's been some issues with ipads, dunno what the solution is.

fair enough. you can also buy your own btw.

think people like hawkeye for the td5 - £250

not cheap, but if the dealer would really charge that much then it would be worth it :)

Unlikely. I'm on the Isle of Man - rather small population here! I'm not using anything Apple, btw, just a Thinkpad.

check you haven't got private browsing on in the browser settings

edit: oh not apple, nm ;)

try a different browser to narrow the issue down if you want. chrome is good

AISI, the only thing preventing this engine from running now is the injectors can't be squirting diesel into the bores AT ALL (since there's not even a hint of ignition). So it's looking like a EMU issue at a guess. I've tested the EMU earth point as someone suggested a while back and it's fine. I've got an oscilloscope I could theoretically put on the leads to the injectors, but since there's almost bound to be no signal on them, there's little point. Unless theirs some secondary fuel pump that I'm unaware of that's packed up, of course.

Brief update: I've just been speaking to some wallah at one of these auto-electrical testing places who's under the distinct impression that the TD5 is the "Transit engine" and he's gone off to see if his code reader is compatible with that. I've not heard this before, tbh. Is this engine used in Transits? cheers. I don't want him coming over here if his reader isn't compatible.

no

Oh well. This is what I've come to expect of a "country" with a total pop of only 80k. You can't get the expertise - unless you need a corporate accounant or tax lawyer, of course, in which case you've come to the right place.;)

The TDCi Puma is the later engine also used in Transits.

Is there something funny in the water on the I of Man?

depends on your budget but as you are quite ''isolated'' there if you can afford better get a hawkeye cos i'm sure it will pay for itself Bearmach HAWKEYE Diagnostic Hand Held Tool - Land Rover Defender TD5 | eBay

It says it comes with "1 unlock code" - don't like the sound of that! What's the meaning of that? Do I have to pay some sort of repeat fee each time I use it?
I'd much sooner find someone locally who has one or some equivalent and just bung them 50 quid for their trouble, tbh.

you should buy a hawkeye and offering a diagnostic for 30quid.. you'd be minted :D

Only if I were in the line of diagnostics, which I'm not. (Unless of course you're implying Land Rovers are so unreliable I'd be run off my feet!) ;)

it's a code per model.

so it can do rangies, your td5, etc etc

I use a Nanocom. The original and best TD5 diagnostics machine in my opinion.
I borrowed one of a forum member to clear the three amigos after LR charged £45 to "diagnose" that I needed a new ABS modulator and shuttle valve. Ten minutes later I had sorted the problem which only needed the system bleeding by useing the Nanocom to power bleed each wheel one at a time. Shysters.

That lend saved me over £1600 so I bought a used Nanocom off fleabay for £240.
Since then its more than earned its keep and I've also helped out a few others with the same issues. I only charge the price of a pint to plug it in.
