Hi,

Can anyone advise of a rough idea how long it takes for the engine to reach normal running temperature?

I have a 1.8 petrol, it has the thermostat mod.

Currently it reaches normal temp after about 1km which seems real quick to me, all my other cars are about 3-4 miles? It doesn't overheat at all?

Please tell me this is normal!

Thanks
Chris

My TD4 takes at least 4-5 miles to reach the centre of the gauge, but I guess it depends on how fast you travel and the type of roads you use.

Mines pretty quick - work is about a mile away..say about 10 mins idling and driving time and my pointer is getting to half way.

Mmmmm, now I'm concerned.

In other cars, if I jump straight in and head off the engine is just warming up as I reach the next village about 3 miles away, and that's not even up to normal running temp.

In the Freelander, it reaches temp. Before I've even left the town where I live.

Just concerned I may have a potential catastrophe on my hands!

The 1.8 Freelanders do heat up fast. The guage shows normal from 75°C up to 115°C. This would give you the indication that engine is at running temperature before it's actually there.
For reference my V6 shows normal on the guage in under a mile!!

My V6 runs hot but it takes longer than that to get to temperature!

Do all the usual checks.

I think "potential catastrophe" is the alternative name for Freelander ;)

Thanks for your input guys.

Guess I'll have to just suck it n see....

Just out of interest, do you rev the engine above 3500rpm before it's showing normal?
The PRT stat lets some coolant circulate through the rad at higher rpms. This will slow the warm up cycle. If you don't let it rev then this will speed up the warm up cycle.
It's also worth checking that the original thermostat has been removed and replaced by the restrictor ring.

I don't rev it over 3500 rpm, just normal driving, probably up to 2500/3000 rpm.

Interesting to know Nodge, many thanks, I'll check it out.

Checked my td4 today , 10 mins + 4 miles + to reach normal temp 77degs via the scangauge , no frost today , just for refrence :)
