Hi Peeps
I just left my landy on side of the road :-( due to engine stopping as if no fuel getting to it.
when i started it up (TD5 auto 2003) if was a bit smokey but also sluggish, after a little idling and then throttle it seemed ok, pulled away but about 2000 yards up road it conked out.
This lovely man called Nigel happened to be walking past and said it sounded odd when I passed him, turns out he also has a disco 2.
so he went and got a wrench so we could check fuel filter, it was full and didnt seem to be full of ****e, tried fuel pump with filter off and there was only a slight dripping of fuel, the pump is making its whirling noise as usual but seems to be intermittent, engine turns over fine but not firing up.
Nigel said he had had a similar problem caused by the key fob receiver on the roof between sun roofs failing and his cut out and wouldn't start.

now i wonder if some crap is blocking the fuel tank outlet to filter or maybe its the pimp itself.
have checked fuses and swapped fuel pump relay over the screen wash one and still nothing except screen wash still works so relay is ok.
I have been in contact with neilley (thanks Neil) from here via text and tried what he suggested, the weird thing is that as well as this happening the fuel filler flap has stopped opening too, so cant fill up even if i want to, its fuse seems ok but I remember when i filled up the last two times i had to press the button a couple of times to open it.

i dont have access to a nanocom or hawkeye either, no dash lights showed up when it happened.

any suggestions apart from setting it on fire / selling to a 7 year old or just leaving there to rot away as we only just done the bloody chassis. at least it broke down half a mile from my boat and in other direction half a mile from my yard/.

Help

So a question I have is could this be caused by a blockage and if so which pipe into the filter housing would i need to blow down to try to clear it back into the tank? if i can get it moving to move to yard or back to marina i would be much happier but cos its auto it can't be towed can it? what if front prop was removed, can it be towed then?

Hi KB,

Hope you can see this.

Was the pump constantly running when you were getting intermittent flow from the filter housing?

Cheers

And Finally,

May be worth you watching , there are 3 videos, one shows checking the fuel pump.

Cheers

Agree, sounds like fuel pump to me,

As an aside, can you hear the solenoid actuate in the fuel flap mechanism when you press the button?

I have had one stick, but it just needed flicking out when the button was pressed and then some gentle persuasion to realign it a little.

Cheers

Nice one @neilly and thank you
the pump seemed to be running, it was Nigel thought it was intermittent but maybe it was just going through its cycle? i dont have any experience of electric fuel pumps like the td5, old perkins and bmc diesels are more my cuppa tea :)
when i first removed the filter it was full but as i said when removed and ignition was on it was just dripping but was running as far as I could tell (was getting bloomin cold at this point).
he suggested blowing back into the tank in case it was blocked, i do remember when filling a while back from a 20l jerry can seeing what looked like a small thin strip of paint or plastic go down but had no chance of stopping it, i was using a filler can at time and saw it as it went down the fillers spout and i stopped as quick as i could but it had gone into tank, so i am wondering if it is this that has caused the blockage?

Have you tried the purge procedure?

As said on the phone, I have disconnected the fuel pipe at the FPR inlet before. then ran the fuel pump into a jug to measure the flow over 15 secs. I found on my Fathers D2 that the reason it would not start was that it was trying to run only using a 1/4 of the fuel flow as the HP side of the pump was knackered, fitted the pump out of my D2 and it started on the button.

Cheers

Fuel pump !! & they don't like manky RED that's bin stood at the back of yu shed !!:rolleyes::p
Hahaha
yeah thanks, i think it was ignition on 30 seconds, off on again 30 seconds then crank engine, did it a couple of times i think it was, so may be at least worth trying a few more times and looking at the pipework on @neilly pic i need to remove as i look at the filter housing the outer left pipe?

Did it go through the purge procedure? iirc engine light on dash lights up, and the pump runs on and off for approx 5 minutes.
Another way to try is ignition on and pump the throttle 5 / 6 times and then it should purge cycle,

Cheers

no didn't do it like that so will try shortly as gotta walk past it to get to the shop, will let you know how i get on but i suspect the fuel pump

Ok am sitting in landy and pump is going through purge cycle, will leave it to do it' thing for a few minutes and see what happens
