I'm restoring a 1969 series 2a but with limited spare time. Already stripped down, chassis is good condition previously replaced by former owner and maintained, some work required on bulkhead pillars and footwells need replacement. I plan to strip down and rebuild both axels, brakes and steering, the rest will be aesthetic. I'm going with heritage green with a new canvas roof. It had a replacement engine 2ltr TD from a series 3 but the gearbox is original and fitted with fairy overdrive. It's dropping some oil (which one doesn't) but it's more than can be tolerated. I suspect its seals etc although not yet degreased. What I want to do is pull out the engine and gear box, sit it on a pallet and send it off for a rebuild/refurb. I would welcome recommendations if you know anyone who could do this work?

Not sure what you mean by " 2ltr TD" , such an engine was never fitted to series 3 as standard.
All you need to remove the unit is an engine crane and a mate.
I would split engine/gearbox as most likely they go to different places for work.

Sorry series 3 2.25 diesel. New to this so trying to find my way with as much help as possible. I'll post a pic shortly.

Would it be better to pull it out and send away from recon or buy a recon unit?

The established market leader for Land Rover engine rebuilds is Turner Engineering. There may be others more local to you that do a good job, but I don't have any personal experience of them.
You will need to send the engine to them, and they will strip it, and contact you when they know what, if anything, off the old engine is salvageable.

There are also gearbox reconditioners. Google Search is your friend.

Think very carefully about stripping down the steering relay..... At best it's a dangerous pain in the backside.... At worst it could take your head off.
