hi,

i know this subject's been roughly covered before but i wanted some more exact advice -

if i needed to wade in my 300TDi (which i have needed to before) how deep is it safe to go without fitting a wading breather kit, or wading proofing?

the LR manual says 50cm but that's ****, you can obviously go deeper than that. once before when i needed to wade the water came to just below the engine air intake for a second then i was in shallower water, is this safe if you absolutely must wade?

thanks for tips, don't want to ruin my mechanical parts or anything
 
If LR say a certain depth then why would you not believe it, that is the safe depth they recommend any deeper then you could have problems. Your motor your risk.
 
Without breathers , below hub height ;)

Of course you can wade upto the air intake....... but not completely safely without risking any water damage. Slightly less chance of damage if hubs and gear box are cold.

Thats not to say you cant do it in an emergency but you will need to replace diff/ gearbox oil ;)
 
It will have breathers fitted to the axles, they run up the bulkhead, to wade you need the two wading plugs in to stop taking in water and damaging your transmission, flywheel and timing cover also there is a plate on timing case, breather kits available for this also or can take water in. Stock breather plugs can't be left in or it won't breath so after wading need taking out, fitted a breather kit to mine so they can be permanently fitted, all the breathers run up to a custom manifold then up the snorkel so in theory could wade up to that, however as found on mine whoever fitted the snorkel needed shooting as it wasn't sealed properly so completely useless, it is now though.
Landrover specs are correct without above procedures.

If you waded that high without plugs I'd change your entire transmission oils as they will have water in.
 
Theoretically you should be ok up to wheel depth, stock breathers end in the engine bay, or just above top of the wheel height for the rear axle

also might want to consider the gearbox and tranny box breathers.

you may be able to use a reducer from the existing pipe that should be connected to the banjo to the pipe listed by BFG, Or change the banjos fitted to smaller diameter pipes, on mine the 90 degree elbow air fitting sat a bit high on the gearbox so I used the existing banjo.

I think I read somewhere that the gearbox and transfer box breathers need a 1/4 bsp connector, haven't got around to doing these yet though.
 
Also if you are going to get a timing case breather, ( the replacement cover) make sure it can fit, I tried one and the banjo thread stuck thru the plate enough to interfere with the Injection pump central bolt. NOT GOOD, not sure if they are all like that.

my tranny and trans jointed fine with 6mm joints and the pipe listed above

the parts came today to breath my pas bottle and fuel tank
 
depends on the emergency for wading depth doesn't it?

if it was a volcano erupting behind me and I had to try and wade through 6 ft waters, then I'd attempt it :D
