Right chaps. Picture yourselves in Solihull between 1994 and 2002 on the night shift. You're having a game of brag and the gaffer comes up and says "Three more to finish off tonight, any ideas on what EKAs to give them?"

That is clearly bolleaux but we know that LR know what they are. Not the sort of thing the night shift would remember. We know that LR need the Registration Certificate and ID. Fair do's.

The question is, do they have a "Big Book" of EKAs or do they work it out from the Reg Cert. The only thing on that that would be of interest to them is the VIN so I had a look at mine.

Have a look at the last six digits of the VIN - say 324544
Now split those x/xx/xxx - Add the digits before and after the /s. In this example it would be 3/2+4/5+4+4 = 3/6/13 or EKA 3613

Now, it may just be a coincidence but it works out on mine. Numbers I've provided are bogus - don't know why I bothered.
Could you have a look at yours and report back?

If that's tru then I can't imagine it's never been publicised and it's just made every p38 in the land instantly less secure!!!

I hope it is true tho in a way cos the dealers won't be able to thieve cash for summat simple

Working backwards from the end do you have as the last nine characters as

digit(d) letter(l)

d-l-l-d-d-d-d-d-d

If so, do the first 3 of the final 4 digits add up to say 15 and are the last to digits of you key code 1-5?

Yes my vin is in the form d-l-l-d-d-d-d-d-d.

However the sum of the first 3 of the last 4 digits are not the last 2 digits of my key code!

Your theory doesn't hold up because if the 3 digits in the vin where each 9 the maximum sum would be 27. So the last 2 digits in the EKA code could never be more than 27 !

Seems mine is just a coincidence then. I'm pretty sure that there is an algorithm of some sort. I'm probably too thick to work it out though.

Just getting back to your first post. Think you will find statistically that the nightshift in any factory is the most productive by far pro-rata.

Being a softy Southerner I am ashamed to say that I don't think I have ever set foot in a factory so I have to rely on stereotypes that are probably inaccurate.

Fascinating.

What got me thinking about this was a formula for checking VAT numbers.

A VAT number has 3-4-2 format i.e. 3 digits, a gap, four digits, a gap then 2 digits. The first 7 digits are multiplied by 8,7,6,5,4,3,and 2. Add the resulting figures. Then find the multiple of 97 which is less than the total. Find the difference and this should be equal to last 2 check digits in a valid VAT number!.

Example:
VAT NO: 123-4567-15
1*8=8
2*7=14
3*6=18
4*5=20
5*4=20
6*3=18
7*2=14
Total: 112

1 * 97 = 97, difference = 15 and this is equal to the last two check digits!

Unfortunately I only have one VIN and one EKA so I'll never crack it.

An explanation of LR VINs is here http://www.dingocroft.co.uk/acatalog/vin_numbers.htm
