Hi there
Need some help been looking on E bay at these bypass valves has anybody fitted one how good are they and will they do what they claim or just bugger up the engine. This is what they say:-

Landrover Freelander TD4 Diesel EGR Bypass Valve
This valve has been carefully designed and manufactured to replace the original EGR valve system. The original system allows hot and contaminating exhaust gasses to enter the intake system on the Landrover Freelander TD4 diesels and mix with the oil causing thick layers of carbon/sludge to build up on the walls of the intake system thus reducing performance. Also the EGR valve that is present in the standard EGR body reduces the intake opening by some 40% which in return severly restricts the volume of air reaching the engine thus reducing performance.
The factory fitted exhaust gas recirculation system has been applied to all modern diesel and petrol engines for some years. The basic principal behind the factory part is to allow some of the exhaust gasses to enter into the inlet system, essentially helping to control the emission out put of the vehicle. However, this is not necessary as diesels are not measured on CO2 emission out put, but particulate (soot). There are two main draw backs from having this on your car. One, is that by allowing hot exhaust gas to pass back in to your inlet system you lower the effective combustion achieved, as an engine will always combust better on cold dense air. Secondly, the soot from EGR mixes with the oil vapor produced by the turbo and forms a paste which sticks to the inlet manifold and ports and reduces the flow, in effect causing the engine to strangle itself.
The EGR bypass has been manufactured using 8mm thick laser cut flanges (unlike other cheap versions on ebay that come with a 4mm flange that easily distorts and does not seal properly) and all the sub assembly components have been assembled using jigs to ensure accuracy and consistency every time. This product has been MIG welded by a time served welding engineer.
Each EGR valve is professionally fully POWDER COATED in gloss black to ensure that an excellent aesthetic appearance is achieved along with maximum corrosion protection thus ensuring that the product enjoys . Other cheap EGR bypasses on ebay are poorly wet sprayed and have exposed parts of the component that will corrode within days of fitting.
This replaces the existing EGR assembly and in return it offers the following improvements over the standard EGR system.
§ Improved air flow.
§ Reduced turbo lag,
§ More torque from 1200rpm till the redline
§ Smoother engine running
§ Better throttle response
§ Prevents carbon build up in the intake system
§ More power (up to 10bhp)
§ Significant reduction of black smoke under full acceleration.
Go on give your Landrover Freelander TD4 the Power Increase that it deserves.
Please note that this item is designed and manufactured to very high standards unlike other replica EGR bypasses that have started to appear on ebay which are of poor quality!!!
 
Just done the EGR Bypass on my TD4 and it has made notable difference. Not convinced its given me an extra 10bhp, but certainly improved pick up from low revs.

They are easy enough to fit, its well documented on the forum about the state of the EGR valve when you come to remove it, mine was bad. Very sooted up and lots of gunk pushed through in to the inlet manifold. My advice (taken from here) is to spend time cleaning the inlet manifold before refitting it. Ming used overn cleaner, I used some parafin as that was all I had, still it cleaned up a treat.

I would recommend the mod to anyone, got the MOT today so will see how it does on emissions, I am told the bypass should make no difference. I will let you know.

Please let me know how you get on with the MOT. See if the MOT chap notice the vac pipe not connected plus the Mod you have done. The other thing i was wondering with this bocked off. Can the turbo still get lubricate though to it.
 
My MOT with EGR bypass blew 0.41 PPM against a max of 1.5 PPM and so went through as a fast pass.

(Also has the Synergy II on too)

Car breezed through its MOT without a mention of the bypass. Blew 0.27ppm, got an advisory on anti roll bar drop link having sme play but that was all!. I have been running some Millers additive through the car too, which is making a difference.

The reason for EGR is to reduce the temperature within the combustion so that oxides of nitrogen are not formed. These are carcinogeous and are obviously undesireable especially in urban areas.

Diesels do not depend upon a stoiciometric mixture (right air/fuel ratio) for correct combustion and are over-supplied with air, hence oxygen. This allows them to burn the fuel quickly and efficiently and reach high gas temperatures within the cylinder. At the high temperatures the free oxygen combines with the nitrogen to form various oxides, the undesireable gasses. By introducing exhaust gasses from which much of the oxygen has been removed the amount of oxygen in the incoming charge is diluted. This slows down the rate of burning within the cylinder, reducing the peak temperatures reached and minimising the oxides of nitrogen that are produced.

The presence of these gasses within the exhaust are not measured in the MOT test so fitting the EGR blanking mod cannot be detected. The performance gain comes because the fuel is burned faster and more efficietly as a result of the increased oxygen available. In some engines the recircilated gasses can be up to 40% of the cylinder charge, so engines can feel sluggish.

You have to decide whether you want performance or to poison the rest of the population.
 
but surely, if as in your post, "the engine is running more efficiently" then the overall emissions level must be reduced ? For an inefficient engine, as we have all experienced, will be kicking out clouds of smoke, whilst an efficient one will have very little waste.

Well, do I want sluggish performance with poorer fuel economy which churns out even more pollution or better performance & improved economy with a few oxides of nitrogen as the "price to pay"............................ Hmmmm let me think.

Seriously though, you do get a boost, some cars get more than others - mine gave me much better performance & improved economy. Win win I would say.

The problem is that without EGR the high temperatures lead to oxides of nitrogen being produced whch are the undesireable emissions. These are not produced at the lower temperatures reached when EGR is employed. So no, emmissions are increased by the chemical reactions caused by the higher temperatures. The fuel will still be burned efficiently and it is a scientific fact that the higher the working range of the temperature wihin an engine the more efficient it is.
 
Until the boffins create a 'Star Trek a likey' Transporter to allow me to travel to my destination in the shortest possible time I'd put performance over planet any time.

Besides which, all this guff about saving the planet is all a load of bumfluff anyhoo. All our cars/TV's/Fridges etc may well be, scientifically speaking, shovelling out extra mg's of nasty but it is nothing in comparison to what your average volcano spews up........Sorry if I dont buy into your argument but hey, the Nat Geo and Discovery channel is way more interesting than the Politics show!

Once EGR By-Pass is fitted is it important to blank of the vacom pipe? I did this when I fitted EGR By=Pass to my TD4 and after day or so the engine makes a whinning sould as if a motor war spinning free and slowing down. Any ideas? I have unplugged the blocked vacum pipe and in the past few days the running on / whinning sound seems to have ceased. But with the bad weather recently I have not been driving the Freelander & instead using the 110 to get about.

Landrover recommend that the 'Pressure limiting valve' is now replaced at every 12000 mile service on the TD4.The filter can get blocked at over this mileage and can couse blow back at the dipstick. Does anyone know if replacing the standard EGR with the straight through conversion EGR cuts down the amount of oil in the emissions and extends the life of the Plv?
(The oil being drawn back into the engine with the exhaust through the standard EGR)

I have to mention this: An EGR By-Pass might be legal in the UK, in certain countries it isn't. Even if you pass the emissions, there might be a law against by-passing anyways. So, non-UK people should check it out before making adjustments to their car...

Shouldn't think so, it'll only stop the exhaust gases & their carbon particulates from entering the inlet system & shouldlessen the amount of sludge build-up but the oil will get in.
 
What & where is Preasure Limiting Valve of TD4? I am confused. I changed Crankcase filter,fuel filter & Fitted EGR by-pass valve. I have 60,000 miles on TD4 and now U say there is another valve needs changing. HELP
