Hi all was wondering if i could grab some of your knowledge for afew mins..

when in driving at about i get black smoke at about 35mph an about 60 although sometimes also at just random speeds an the beauty lags abit, it feels like im dragging back or got the wind pushing against me would be the best way to describe it then it will randomly just go back to normal an the smoke will stop, its like its gagging for air , which makes me think egr problem? What do you guys think? Also if it is an egr problem am i best to just clean it or should i just get the bypass kit of ebay?

thanx in advance , rich

Is this where you introduce your'sen and tell us what engine or even age vehicle your talking of.

guessing you have a td4 then ?

by the time you have messed about with the egr and cleaned it, it's quicker and more effective to fit the bypass kit from ebay, and it won't clog anymore.

Sorry guys i didnt know the etiquette lol, let me start again

My name is rich, i live in London an recently upgraded my banger of a peugeot 406 estate , 1998, an now have a lovely 2 litre diesel Freelander 2002,

Any advice greatly appreciated an does what im describing sound right for an egr problem?

even if that is not the problem bypass the EGR anyway,
how are the air and fuel filters? might also check fuel pump, but I'm not so comfortable 'round Td4s

could be the MAF being a bit daft. That unit is quite well known for playing up. If you unplug it and go for a drive and its better then you found your problem. My MGZT (same engine) had issues similar to yours and it was a really easy fix

mass air flow sensor, its basically a heated wire which air passing over it cools and this change in temperature reflects the volume of air which passes over it and passes this signal onto the ecu which meters fuel flow etc etc...

thats it in simple terms!

if you look on the air inlet pipework you will see a cable with 3 or 4 wires going into a plug connector. Unplug it and see what happens!

Do a search on here and I am sure there will be some pics or something. Anyway it COULD be this. Might not be. Who knows but it doesnt cost anything to try it does it.

Check your turbo / intercooler / egr hoses for splits , and tightness of clips , look out for oil spray as a sign of the above !

Is the egr hoses the small braided rope type hose attached to the egr on the underside or the big blue hose? Sorry guys in trying lol in a terrible mechanic but very enthusiastic an willing to learn so bare with me lol, cheers again guys for the advice an ill be going through this thread whilst in by my car tomorrow so not to miss anything in supposed to be checking.

Check all the big black hoses for secureness and/or splits.

EGR blank and an inlet manifold clean is a no brainer too. You'll be amazed at the sh!t you'll get out.

You guys are stars im making a list of all these things to do as we speak

Ok guys i tried pulling the mafs out but it seemed really stuck in, is it the small plug with 4 wires on the drivers side slightly under the air pipe? Do i need any tools to get it out or just keep pulling lol didn't wanna break it.

Ok next i went to my local garages in Camden, London, one garage said to bring it in so he can have a look because he didn't think the egr makes it Smokey, the other garage said to bring it in an he will clean or bypass the egr if i get the bypass, an he will check all hoses an clean manifold for 120 to 150? Id love to try but if in honest ive broke all my previous cars from messing with them an i really like this one lol.

Heres another clue to the problem hopefully , i noticed today it gets Smokey when struggling to get up sharp hills in the wrong gear an gets really Smokey, does this still sound like an egr problem? If so ill order the bypass tonight on ebay, in also going to order the filter kits of ebay tonight too, cheers in advance guys
