Just got video to load, that sounds really numb if I'm honest are all your vacuum houses to the turbo back on correctly

As far as I can remember but I will double check. Come to think of it I can't seem to remember there being any piping from the turbo to the injection pump so that could be the problem. I know its getting boost as the top intercooler hose pressurises and I actually managed to blow it off yesterday when I forgot to tighten the jubilee clips but the injection pump might not be enrichening for boost.

I had one other thought as well I have noticed that the cylinder head bears marks of having been disturbed and replaced, (yellow painted numbers indicate 2nd hand scrap yard sourced part, and socket marks around the head bolts) It occurred to me that someone could have put that on with the wrong thickness gasket lowering the compression. So that was my next route of investigation. I have had it compression tested and I can't remember whether he said it was 280psi or 380psi if it was 280psi then that could point to my theory.

Possibly but have you tried a new decent make lift pump (not britpart) it could be that the I/P is doing the work of the lift pump because it's lazy,

Just been outside and had a look. Only connections to the pump are, fuel supply, fuel return, Injection pipes, and electrical multiplugs. I can't see where any vaccuum pipes could connect to be honest. Again looking at the turbo itself I can see pipe from MAF sensor and oil supply. and again I can't see anywhere that looks like it should have a connection that doesn't.

Are you sure an EDC car would have turbo vacuum control I would have thought the fueling would be controlled by the MAF sensor and if that wasn't working it would illuminate the check engine light and throw codes at the ECU. No codes show ive checked.

To recap what's been done to the car.

Valve clearances
Lift pump (done under warranty by dealer he wont do anymore than that, thinks its probably brit part)
Timing belt
Water Pump
Fuel Lines
Fuel Filter
Sedimenter
Tank Pickup.
Spill pipes
Injection pump replaced
Injection timing set with LR special tools.

Ive even used a section of clear piping between the filter and injection pump and can confirm it remains full of fuel and no air can be seen.

See why im starting to lose the will to live. I bought what was supposed to be a car I could just drive away and use so paid a premium for it bought a 300 not TD5 as I should of been able to get a minter for the money. Ive ended up with yet another project car when I needed a daily and no daily and its frankly embarrassing as im a mechanic by trade.

All I can say is don't go by price as to whether a vehicle will be good or not and for gods sakes inspect it thoroughly. I didn't now im paying for it!

Mechanic myself pal no where your coming from. We as mechanics can also look to deep into a fault, if you get what I mean. How long you had vehicle and was it private or trade sale. Next question is where abouts are you?

Had it since November the 18th, trade sale with 3 month warranty which he won't honour as I serviced it (oil and filters). He also states there is nothing wrong with the performance and its no different to when it was bought. Which is true but it wasn't right the day I picked it up but decided to humour him when he was saying all it needed was a good service. I wish to god I hadn't bought it im not good at buying cars I trust people to much and take them at their word which wont happen again.

There are several things im not happy with and I think I will be going to trading standards.

For one the advert stated it had a new timing belt. (The cover had obviously not been disturbed, the tensioner and idler bearings were shot and the belt was not new.)
Another was I specifically asked if the sunroofs leaked and he stated they didn't, guess what they do
Another again I asked him if the boot floor was sound and was told it was good and solid where as it is rotten to the point the whole panel and support rails need replacement.

Im based in west wales near Lampeter and the dealer I got it from is local to me and deals only in Land Rovers, as much as I would like to I wont name and shame unless specifically asked to do so.

defintiely get on to trading standards sounds like he is taking the ****, only asking where abouts you are as would of taken a trip over to have a look with you if not to far but am afraid I'm near manchester.

as for wont honour the warranty because you serviced it, that is BS as main dealers when they sell brand new vehicles cant refuse warranty anymore just because it has been serviced at none dealer garage. only thing they may get funny onis not using oe equipment.

in the mean time see if this will help you at all.

Think i've found something. Its raining here today, suprise suprise, and I spotted rainbows on the drive. Looked underneath no sign of oil leaks so fired her up and spotted dampness on the under bonnet return pipe connector, revved it up and drip drip drip. Pushed the pipe into the push fit connector harder and it no longer drips but it does still get damp when revved. So will remove the connector and replace with some rubber pipe and fuel clips. It certainly would be nice if thats all it was but ive a feeling it wont be that simple.

The only concern I have now is that seeing as he refused to honour the warranty I have now done more major work like the timing belt and blanked the EGR valve. I could argue that was done as a diagnostic measure to rule out problems with it, as the valve is still in place just disconnected from the air intake.

Right solved the fuel leak and its not good news.

She fired up much much easier but with no fuel leaks the result was this. Clouds and clouds of smoke, white, and a pronounced missfire when taken on idle. Once the engine warmed up missfire went to be replaced with loud tapping noise from the top end. To be honest I think this engine is pretty much dead and considering the body is not good its not worth fixing so effectively I think this discovery is scrap.

Nope not pulling but once she gets a decent fuel supply it becomes obvious how knackered the engine is. Im pretty sure the cars been clocked the numbers don't line up and it says its done 150k the wear in the engine that ive found myself says its much more than that.

On the plus side it does have a good autobox so I may find another disco with a shot gearbox and just swap my gearbox into it as I need an automatic due to disabilitys

I have to say its a shame you've been bitten by a pup. my 98 300tdi is auto and can't fault it really. it has been played with majorly to the point I think they have converted it away from edc

Just had the compression test results confirmed 280psi and equal on all cylinders confirming a worn out engine.

wouldnt necessarily draw that conclusion ,if all pots are the same ,dooes it breath heavy out of filler cap ,have you checked tappets and push rods and followers

No heavy breathing from the filler cap, no blue smoke, its tapping badly but the clearances were recently checked and reset. I don't think its overly worn rings because of lack of smoke but I do think the car needs yet more work to check.

Leak off checks on the injectors are they all performing and the noise is possibly diesel knock?
