I'm giving up and going to the pub !! I've tried everything that I can find out about and still no joy. Might have to admit defeat and get a local specialist out here :¬(

If you put in your location you never know, somebody may be close and prepared to help:)

It's most likely the USB to serial adaptor driver. Not running vista by any chance are you.

I'm running the driver supplied on disk with RR software. The seller seems pretty clued up on these issues. I know that drivers can be an issue.
Its not Vista but frankly the OS makes no odds, its just that, its an OS, not the be all and end all.

Dream on. Getting the USB to serial to function on Vista is often a problem.
If you plugged in before you installed the driver, as I said before a standard win dirver will have loaded, installing the correct driver afterwards will not superceed the win driver which will have to be deleted.

I'm not on Vista (dream on in your own words lol) I'm using W7. I've made sure the installed driver is the supplied one, not windows default. I'm not great at many things but OS & Windows is one of my better points.

The point is, did you plug in the adaptor before you installed the driver?

Yes I did , not being aware of the issues.... but I've uninstalled the drivers and made sure the driver is the one supplied. I'm hoping thats done the trick, having said that it still won't communicate properly so maybe not !
Don't know what else to do.

So that is most likely your problem, you cannot easily replace the Win default driver, it needs adjustments to the registry etc can be a real PITA, you can try another USB port, shouldn't work but occasionally does.
Always pays to read the instructions before you start, I've had to do a system restore in the past to rid the system of the default driver loaded in error.
