Just putting the car back in its parking spot and the eas pump was going crazy making the whole car vibrate. By the time I got to it and pulled the plug the body was up to 75°C. Managed to decompress it all and have got it on the bench cooling down. The three motor cables have melted so guess it's knackered.
Just another day in the life of a P38.

Either it was making no pressure or there is an air leak or the relay is stuck on.

The piston isn't making any seal but that's a minor issue as the whole insides has just disintegrated. It has that awful burnt smell where the windings have just fused. It's a mess.

Never seen one go like that, the temperature sensor should have saved it.
Reckon it would have caught fire if I hadn't noticed it. I've had one go wrong on my other p38 but that was a snapped conrod where the piston jammed in the bore probably as it snapped. Have to be careful when putting the new pump in just in case it wasn't the cause but something else failing first. My clothes just reek of the smell. :confused:

Check relay 20 has not jammed on.

If it isn't the relay check the loom for chafing. I cannot recall which wire goes to ground to force it on, possibly green?

Where the wires went into the casing on the pump the insulation was all split and had melted together so that might be spot on. The green was the worst.
 
Definitely check the wiring from the pump connector to fusebox before connecting the new pump. You could connect a spare headlight bulb in place of the pump & verify the relay switches as it should. Remember the ECU will only power the relay if the thermal switch wire is grounded.

I wonder if the old pump bearing(s) failed causing the armature to short on the casing ?
 
It was a mess inside all around the brushes and the temp regulator was just loose inside. Some of the connections to the armature were bent. Still not sure where the melted plastic bits came from.

Maybe you could replace them with some Berghaus. They have a new collection out you know?
 
New pump and relay have arrived but got to wait until next weekend to do the work. Will update once I have done the work.
 
Pump and relay fitted, wiring checked and it all functions as it should be.
However I may have to sell it though as the cost of living is starting to impact us and running three cars for the two of us is not helping the finances. Both our other cars, Fiat Panda Trekking and Octavia Vrs Tdi estate are more practical and both do over 50mpg.
Will wait and see how the finances are closer to Christmas. :(

SORN it and wait? Although the tax and insurance isn't that much. They don't like sitting though. Damp kills them. They want to be used.

Will wait until the spring before I do anything rash. Tax and insurance combined is about £50 a month and looking at the MOT mileage I only did 1500 miles last YEAR so actual fuel cost is not massive either. Think this year I have spent a bit making it roadworthy and sorting out niggles and bad installations by previous owners so overall pounds per mile is higher than normal, plus its not worth a great deal as is not a minter. :rolleyes:

Yes, my mileage has plummeted now I work almost exclusively from home. Hard to justify 2 cars really but they're both old and I need a backup for the Rangie!
