Does anyone know if the early Range Rover came with cruise control? I've recently purchased a 1977 101 with it's original V8 still in it and was wondering if the early Range Rovers had cruise control, if i could install it onto my 101?

Extra choke cable. ;)
Of course add it to the throttle side

There are "aftermarket" cruise systems out there, but you would need one that uses a cable on the throttle, not one that connects to an electronic throttle.

Back in the 'seventies when I was driving sand/ballast most of the deliveries were local but on occasions when a longer trip was called for cruise control was employed to relieve the calf muscles of my right leg as the loud pedal was heavy when pressed to the floor for long periods.
I can hear some of you older guys saying 'didn't know trucks had cruise control back then'
'Oh yes they did .. a length of wood jammed between the top of the 'organ' accelerator pedal & the substantial (in those days) lower dash

That reminds me of a chap i used to work with at the bull centre. We had an old 1977 SWB S3 diesel which we had to use for towing the horse box to occasionally go and fetch or return a bull. It had the old hand ratchet throttle. It didn't give you full throttle but Colin didn't mind. He often get on the motorway, crank the hand throttle up to the max and then drive with both legs on the seats beside him. What with not getting full throttle and towing what could be over two ton with an old 2 and a quarter diesel, it wasn't like he had to overtake anything...
He stopped driving like this when the one day he was driving back up the M5 when a pallet fell off the back of a lorry in front of the van that was in front of him. He only spotted it with maybe 30 yards notice when the van in front swerved to avoid it. Colin leapt? into action but what with trying to get his legs down and his feet back onto the pedals he didn't try to swerve as he was returning from collecting a bull so the trailer was full and heavy and i'm sorry to have to say but a pallet WAS injured during this story. Injured, and bloody WELL flattened!

Did they come with cruise control then? My old '96 Disco 300TDi had it but it never worked. Apparantly it worked somehow, off the vacuum system. Someone pointed out the pipe that ran along the bulkhead that looked more like raw edge protection sleeving as it was split along most of the length was probably the reason it didn't work.
I chose the Range Rover section as the engine and running gear is all early Range Rover so thought if they had it it should work on the 101.

When I bought mine a few years back, it came with an aftermarket cruise control unit (she was used as towing vehicle to tow boats around for a while). Never worked, so I tore it out. Never really figured out how it was supposed to begin with, but yes, it was connected to the throttle cable. I think, but don't quote me on it, that it was a Bosch system...
