Well, to top this story off I must have left my 32mm spanner in the street yesterday and some c*nt picked it up! So, since i'm away for the work week I'm going to manufacture a tool like the official LRT-12-093 and LRT-12-094. Already got the dimensions for it from the web, so if anyone needs them, drop me a shout.
The tool for the diesels is essentially made of two big handle spanners: the usual 32mm and a big 47mm that locks the water pump pulley's bolts.
 
I had to take my viscous fan off last week, to change the water pump. Using just a 36mm viscous fan spanner and a claw hammer, Luckily it came off quite easily as did the pulley nuts. I would have preferred to have the Pulley nut holding tool not so much to take it off but for putting it back on again. I'm not sure its on tight enough, mcapinha Could you post the link for the tool I'd be very interested. Cheers.

I firm nip with the spanner should suffice as the reason they are anti clockwise is as the engine is running its Tightening up at the same time :)
 
You don't need a holding tool a long tyre lever inserted side ways or a long 3/8 extension bar you can lock the pump
by the bolts in the front simples

Yes can be wedged with a bar between bolts

Yeah i know, but you said lock the fan with the bolts on the front. It's the pulley that needs locking behind the fan. I know what you mean but someone who has not done it wouldn't from that description. :):)

Thanks amended typing one thing and thinking another , I don't like the idear of thwacking the pump shaft myself , with the proper spanner and a bar there should be no problem .

you dont need to worry about retightening viscous nut it does it itself hence the lh thread on some
and hitting all flats in turn will loosen any nut i do it regular on people land rovers never fails

Hitting them how, exactly? Hitting them on the edge to kinda drive them round, or hitting them at 90 deg to the flat to 'spread' them, or something?? Sounds like a trick I could do with learning...
 
on the edge to see if its loose then in the middle of each flat it, if done enough it would eventually stretch nut ,

People don't read ie hitting it in the corner flat edge of the way you need to turn the nut don't see the need myself and why bash the water pump shaft can't do bearing any good how tight could it be and how many bashes would an Amateur need stick to doing the correct way before you break things
 
Using a sharp cold chisel along the edge of the hex and a sharp tap in the direction of rotation as a last resort for someone without a spanner or the special tools will not harm anything. 99 times out of a 100 providing the belt is still on, putting a spanner on the nut and shocking it with an hammer in the right direction will shift them.

A spanner or a Special steped spanner , is what a viscous spanner is stepped and tapping it will usually just turn it as the belt isn't tight enough to hold water pump shaft , hence holding tool bodgers a proper v spanner less than a tenner and a bar cheaper that a holding tool wack away !

It's not you or me its the others :( come on some people just haven't got it like the chap who wants the holding tool to tighten it ,:jaw::jaw:Dearn't let them loose with a hammer

Lots of people on here should not be working on their own cars. They don't have a clue. But do we stop giving people information in case they balls something up.There are people on here who are handy lads but don't know the tricks to help them along. You can't ask everybody for a written qualifications print out every time before you give advice. :)

I know that's why I try not to let them loose with sharp objects. Lol
